Sylvain Fortier presents the musician Martin Tétreault with selected excerpts from his release Grrr Tok Ahhh Hmmm. Part two of two.

Fanfare Pourpour and DAME warmly invite the public to the release party for Fanfare Pourpour’s 4th album for the imprint Monsieur Fauteux, m’entendez-vous?, the much anticipated Danse des breloques. Arranged by Jean Derome and Némo Venba this CD features no less than a 20-piece orchestra. The launches will take place on Monday May 31, 2010 at Le Lion d’Or in Montréal and on Thursday June 10, 2010 at Le Cercle in Québec.

Swift, skillful, imaginative, efficient. The music that Steve Lacy wrote is like this, and so are the players in the Rent, a Toronto quintet led by trombonist Scott Thomson. On their first disc, the band is all this and also exuberant, precise and swinging. They’ve discovered a way into a house full of air and light, and it’s delightful to hear how thoroughly they explore and enjoy the situation. 9/10

In jazz, it is nothing strange to have a CD released by a trumpeter. Not so in the classical field. Amy Horvey is in a league of her own. Among those in the know, she is considered a genius. Big word, but justified fully by what we hear on the Ottawa-based musician’s debut CD. From a point of view of a composer exploring the “uncharted territories,” Horvey is a dream-interpreter. Technically impeccable, she also has incredible interpretive intelligence, emotional sensitivity and a great deal of enthusiasm for even the weirdest compositions, sometimes including strong extra-musical elements. There are two highlights on this CD, namely Cecilia Arditto’s Música Invisible, a fantastically innovative piece with a slew of unusual, yet beautiful sounds, and Apparatus inconcinnus from Canada’s own Ryan Purchase, a theatrical piece in which the trumpet sounds like a happily inebriated village storyteller. Magnificent!

Be on the lookout for the Festival des musiques de création (FMC), a festival taking place in Jonquière (Quebec) from May 20 to 29, 2010. amongst the artists performing, you’ll hear Miriodor, Jean Derome et les Dangereux Zhoms, Ugly Beauties, The Rent, Vulgarités with Isaiah Ceccarelli and Michel F Côté and finally Les temps qui courent a project that brings together Jean Derome, Martin Tétreault and Frank Martel around the songs of Nathalie Derome…
