www.actuellecd.com en www.electrocd.com herbergen beide Canadese labels voor nieuwe muziek, jazz, musique concrète, elektro-akoestische muziek, noise en experimentele muziek. De eerste omvat onder meer DAME met sublabel Ambiances Magnétiques, Victo, Squint Fucker Press en Spool. De tweede labels als empreintes DIGITALes en No Type. No Type is het grappigste label, want daarop nemen ze de genregrenzen niet zo nauw en kan je elk van bovenstaande stijlen krijgen gemengd met pop, rock, techno of hiphop. Aimé Dontigny ofwel A_dontigny en Érick d’Orion bemoeien zich graag met andere artiesten, maar vomen samen de noiseband morceaux_de_machines. Op Estrapade staat noise, opgebouwd uit groovende lagen elektro-akoestische muziek. Het klinkt moddervet en vervaarlijk. Ik eet niet vaak vlees, maar bij dit kolossale geluid klinkt het bakken van kilo’s gehakt perfect. Industrieel vormgeven en martelen met dood vlees. Ze hebben hulp uit goede huize, namelijk de draaitafel buitenbeentjes Martin Tétreault en Otomo Yoshihide. U bent gewaarschuwd (indien de hoes al niet afdoende was).

De Canadees Martin Tétreault en de Japanner Otomo Yoshihide (ex-Ground Zero) hebben allebei in ontelbare projecten gezeten en hebben niets en niemand meer wat te bewijzen. Getuige 1. Grrr hebben ze misschien alleen nog wat aan de duivel te bewijzen. In 2003 zijn ze samen met hun draaitafels op tournee gegaan. Lange, slopende draaidagen, waarbij het publiek dat van een flinke pot noise houdt de vingers kon blijven aflikken. Acht live-opnames zijn vastgelegd op dit eerste deel van de live-trilogie. De lawaaierige improvisaties zijn meer dan indrukwekkend. Het piept, schuurt, kraakt, scratcht en blaast; het tweekoppige, kakofonische monster lijkt te spelen met vuur onder de hielen. Zeker met het volume hoog is het een groots en adembenemend hoorspel. Bewondering en prettig afgrijzen wisselen elkaar af. Als mensen nu tegen mij zeggen dat dit geen muziek is heb ik daar begrip voor. Hoewel? Deel 3, 3. Ahhh (te verschijnen in 2005), klinkt ook veelbelovend.

Unless you speak French, information on this Montréal collective is hard to come by — but Fanfare Pourpour’s music is infectious and crosses all borders, regardless of your native tongue. Dating back to 1975, when nine of its members were in a group called L’Enfant Fort, this clique of talented musicians remains together for the pure pleasure of playing, picking up new members young and old along the way; they currently count 15 players of varying ages (22 to 70, in fact) and occupations among their ranks, all of them in ready to answer the call of duty when it comes.

Weaving a contagious web of horns, accordions and oompah band rhythms, Fanfare may initially remind you of a carousel ride, circus sounds flowing outward from the center hub to your ears as your wooden mount makes another lap. But this is no mere polka band; the group offers a subtle twist, with sweeping, sun kissed melodies and raucous bounce fashioned from old school cabaret tunesmithing, breathing new life into Europe’s hand-me-down sound. With so many instruments getting a word in at once, you’d be right to expect some sort of sonic traffic jam, but Fanfare Pourpour are a mini orchestra — everyone plays a carefully delineated role within the joyous, improv-leaning slice of mayhem. Some of the younger members have brought in new jazz styles, too; for instance, blazing trumpets with a John Zorn soul give La noce du brigand a skronking beatnik kick. The emotional payoff (a function of the occasional lyrics) is the icing on Le bal’s overall sound: their music is compelling enough to make young whippersnappers like us forget about rock and electronica for an hour or so.
