Album review
From Montréal, Klaxon Gueule are a trio that have roots in free jazz avantgarde and here play improvised ambient noise through sampling unorthodox uses of live instruments and processing those sounds electronically. Textures are minimal but still very interesting, often of the ambient random percussive sound variety. Mood-wise, most tracks are creepy as hell and scare the shit out of me, like I’ve entered an endless field of mutilated dead babies with nothing on the horizon except a sky washed in charcoal. Very fucking cool and very well executed, with no trouble maintaining my attention. Great

That good ol’ song
It may seem a bit easy, but everyone likes a good song. That said, we don’t all have the same definition of what a good song is. And the artists in DAME’s catalog take some liberties with this format — that’s what makes things exciting. But

And to boldly go where few have gone before
Maybe you would like to go further and hook someone on a kind of “musique actuelle” that is more daring and abstract. Here are a few key albums from DAME’s catalogue in improvised and electronic music.

Review
Montréal-based Klaxon Gueule began their radical transformation from free-jazz improvisation troupe to free-form electroacoustic manipulators with 1999’s release of Muets. Grain journeys even deeper into the strange world of Canadian avant-garde, presenting another round of enticing sonic arrangements far removed from conventional music’s standard structures and tempos.
The Klaxon crew chose the unusual surroundings of a Québecan barn in which to record their third release. This organic environment adds a unique element to the music
Gently cascading pieces make up the majority of Grain. Klaxon relies on subtle changes and false security to convey its colorful moods and unique perspectives. In Orme sans enduit’s shimmering opening, a tweaked guitar sets a casual rhythm as ghoulish gasps peek in from behind the high-pitched notes. Close the blinds, turn off the lights and let your mind roam. Orme…’s horror-movie soundtrack sound will leave you at the mercy of your own imagination
Fonte sur plomb’s metallic title filters into the music. Sporadic percussion bumps and skronks like a dilapidated subway car crawling down the tracks. Giggling guitar notes are unexpectedly replaced by angry chords, only to rapidly dissipate as the car makes its way into the next tunnel. Like Fonte sur plomb, Fer sur plomb continues the metal motif with a linear progression of rattled percussion, warbling guitar and harrowing crackles. It’s almost impossible to tell what sort of instruments are generating these incredible sounds, which makes the track as much an academic exercise as it is an intriguing manifestation of musical innovation.
Listening to Grain in its entirety is flabbergasting
Michel F Côté
As we begin this series of articles on various catalogue-related themes, why not start with the hardest artist to pin down from the Ambiances Magnétiques collective
A late arrival to the Ambiances Magnétiques roster (joining in 1988), Côté readily put himself on the fringe of various geometrically variable groups. He could be heard for the first time in the debut

If it isn’t so easy to give an overview of Michel F Côté as a musician, then that might be because his work goes beyond just music. In fact, one can often hear our protagonist at the theatre and in performance art, with such creators as Robert Lepage and Catherine Tardif. This aspect of his work finds its echo on
Michel F Côté may best be seen as a kind of barometer of Ambiances Magnétiques’ creative activity throughout the years

Review
It is this reverie induced by Grain from Klaxon Gueule. The album was recorded in a barn and the mostly electronic and homemade percussion sound mosaics offer a barnyard of impressions. In Fonte sur plomb I hear the ducks and roadside traffic of a suburban lake. Fer blanc sur frêne is the fast-paced chatter of an industry of metal-munching machines…

Review
The third installment in Klaxon Gueule’s adventures showcases a mature trio that continues to evolve albeit at a slower rate. After the complete transformation that occurred between Bavard and Muets, Grain solidifies the group’s new grounds, expanding its pastures without leaving old ones behind.
