Montréal-based saxophonist Jean Derome has been on the bleeding edge of the contemporary blending of complex, cued composition and unfettered free improvisation for over twenty years. For his performance — which kicked off FIMAV’s 25th edition at the Cinema Laurier — he brought an expanded edition of his Dangerous Zhomes quintet, fleshed out with an additional seven musicians, premiering two new pieces, the 35-minute Traquenards and the shorter, but no less challenging Plates-formes, named after Productions Platforms, the organization behind FIMAV.

It was an expansive palette, featuring reeds, strings, voice, guitar, bass, drums and turntables. Contemporary classicism reminiscent of groups like Univers Zero juxtaposed with moments of chaotic collective spontaneity, with a sonic landscape reliant equally on conventional acoustic sounds as it was the unorthodox, most notably from vocalist Joane Hétu, who brought her own multi-media project, Filature, to the final day of FIMAV 2007. More about texture than melody, Hétu comes from the same school as vocalists like Meredith Monk and Sidsel Endresen, but has her own unconventional slant to making the voice guttural, percussive and, at times, akin to white noise.

Traquenards took full advantage of the potential for subsets within the group, with pianist Guillaume Dostaler and trumpeter Gordon Allen creating a lulling sense of ease before suddenly being engulfed in a flurry of reckless, anarchistic free play from the entire twelve-tet. Rock beats from bassist Pierre Cartier and drummer Pierre Tanguay — another Montréal actuelle mainstay, whose 2007 performance at the Ottawa Jazz Festival with bassist John Geggie and viola da gamba player Pierre-Yves Martel was a highlight of that festival—alternated with dark, complex ensemble passages where clarinetist Lori Freedman meshed with Derome’s various saxophones and flute along with Nadia Francaville’s violin and Jean René’s viola to paint a chamber music soundscape at once appealing and foreboding. Guitarist Bernard Falaise ran the gamut from scratchy tones to wild feedback, contributing sonic colors alongside turntablist Martin Tétreault, last heard at FIMAV 2005 with Michel F Côté.

Derome’s two pieces were a fitting opening for the festival, demonstrating the boundary-busting, genre-defying breadth of Musique Actuelle.

Le fait que les trois œuvres canadiennes enregistrées ici pour la première fois aient été composées dans les années 90 pourrait rendre mélancolique à propos de la difficulté à produire des enregistrements du répertoire contemporain de chez nous… Mais écoutons, et réjouissons-nous. Le Quatuor Bozzini y est si remarquable qu’il donne des ailes aux compositeurs, et le clarinettiste Jean-Guy Boisvert, trop rare sur nos scènes (il enseigne à Moncton), atteint une qualité qui frise la poésie. L’homme a été à l’école de Stockhausen et ça se sent, particulièrement dans la pièce de Piotr Grella-Mozejko. Le quatuor est plus présent, pour notre bonheur, chez Jean Lesage, qui donne son titre au disque, et chez Tim Brady. Du miel pour l’oreille.

[…] Quatre lieux, quatre expériences

L’OFF Festival de Jazz [de Montréal] aura lieu dans quatre salles montréalaises qui se partageront cette année les trois sections principales de l’événement. Tout d’abord, le Pub St-Ciboire tiendra les fameux 5 à 7 du festival où on entendra des artistes comme le Anna Webber Quartet, le trio CLH et le quintette de Mario Allard. La beauté de cette série de spectacles est qu’elle est offerte gratuitement et permet une certaine proximité avec les groupes en prestation.

Le Lion d’Or accueillera cette année la majorité des concerts présentés à 20 heures et à 21 heures 30. Deux soirées spéciales seront organisées en collaboration avec le festival Suoni Per Il Popolo, qui aura lieu du 1^er au 30 juin prochain. Pour l’occasion, La Sala Rossa recevra le groupe de Philadelphie Sun Ra Arkestra le 14 juin et présentera un concert le 15 juin mettant en vedettes plusieurs artistes comme Barnyard Drama, Philippe Lauzier et Gordon Allen.

Au Dièze Onze, club qui se spécialise maintenant dans la diffusion de la musique jazz, les mélomanes pourront assister à des concerts de fin de soirées donnés par des musiciens tel que Erik Hove Soundclash, le Quartette Alexandre Bellegarde et le Dave Watts Quintet.

«Je crois que le spectacle du groupe mythique Sun Ra Arkestra fait assurément partie des plus de notre festival, affirme le président Papadimitriou. C’est un concert à ne pas manquer, mais c’est certain que nous encourageons les gens à aller découvrir des artistes qu’ils ne connaissent pas. Je crois que n^os 5 à 7 au St-Ciboire sont l’occasion idéale de faire de nouvelles découvertes.»

Après plusieurs concerts en solo, des résidences et des collaborations en Italie, en Autriche, en République tchèque et en Allemagne, le percussionniste, improvisateur et facteur d’instrument Ganesh Anandan est de retour à Montréal jusqu’à la mi-juin. Il travaille actuellement au mixage de son prochain CD, enregistré à Wuppertal (Allemagne) avec le daxophoniste Hans Reichel. Le disque, intitulé Self Made, porte sur le travail de ces deux facteurs d’instrument et de leur instrument inventé respectif: soit le daxophone et le shruti stick. Ganesh Anandan retournera à Prague, son pied-à-terre pour l’été, afin de donner des concerts et entreprendre de nouvelles collaborations.

Scat contains four compositions of the Canadian composer and guitarist Tim Brady dating from the years 1998-2000. All pieces are performed by the Australian leading new music ensemble Topology or members of this ensemble and recorded in January 2006 in Brisbane. From the start it is clear that this was a fruitful collaboration. The cd opens with the three part suite Scat. The first and the third part of this piece are very dynamic and powerful. It is a true pleasure to hear this rhythm-driven piece performed by these excellent musicians. The chambermusic of Tim Brady has the power and directness of rock music. In effect it sounds very fresh for modern composed music. Lighting Field — Darkness/ Illuminations consists of two parts. The first part is a very dark piece of music where the instruments play against a background of electronic sampled sounds. The second part ‘Illumination’ is built upon minimalmusic-like patterns played by the piano and violins. It moves steady forward, alternated by parts where the instruments are whirling around and chasing each other. Dark Matter (Primal Pulse) was originally composed for the Relache Ensemble. It is the most introspective piece on this cd. But also in this composition there is often a strong pulse. The cd closes with Struck Twice by Lightning an exhausting battle between viola and tape. Again Brady delivers a cd with very appealing compositions by his hand, and played very convincingly and eagerly by the Topology crew. If Brady is new for you, start here.
