  • Geisteswissenschaften dans The Wire

As you might guess from the quotation from Guy Debord’s La Sociéte du spectacle which proudly adorns the sleeve of Geisteswissenschaften, Aimé Dontigny revels in a refusenik sensibility. A founder member of free noise collective Napalm Jazz and a dedicated servant of the Canadian New Music Network, his first fully fledged solo CD defies easy assimilation. These constructions take standard tropes such as hiphop drum breaks, saccharine sax solos and swooning romantic film scores, and disfigure them with flurries of disruptive sound. But as the violence is generally held in check, the end results are curiously ambivalent; sometimes it’s hard to work out whether you’re being offered the farthest reaches of sound art or just a particularly cerebral dose of triphop. Somehow Dontigny manages to conjure a strange, splenetic grace from his unruly source material and Geisteswissenschaften remains an intriguing if frequently bemusing listen throughout.

This is one of the ballsiest jazz records to come out of Canada in years. Yeah, that’s right, jazz. Not free improv, not musique actuelle, this is music extrapolated from the free and post-bop period of the late ’60s. There’s a whole lot of soul inside this music, though it’s twisted in all kinds of horrible ways. From the get-go, Côté’s drumming conjures freedom within a groove, and the evil cackle of Jesse Levine’s Sun Ra-like organ parts guarantees that outer space ways are nearer than you think. Alexandre St-Onge’s bass is chunky, playing off the lower range of the organ remarkably well. But Bernard Falaise’s guitar work is breathtaking, sometimes referencing soul jazz, sometimes Sonic Youth and always jaggedly melodic. Côté also adds some sweet and sour pocket trumpet to the action, which can be funky or just choppy, depending on what’s going on. The slower pieces provide a much-needed break; the Morton Feldman-inspired Descente Centrale shows off some abstract prettiness by all. Although these songs are typically less than four minutes long, sometimes they descend into nondescript, though aggressive, bluesy shuffles, taking a half point away from this record’s overall score. Due to these players’ very experimental reputations, I must say I’m surprised they had this record in them. This is recommended unconditionally to all instrumental rock fans.

[…] Even when musicians have even an iota of Ahmed’s magnetism they can be persuasive on DVD because of their wit and pluck, Trio Derome Guilbeault Tanguay’s straight-up concert film, Étymologie (Ambiances Magnétiques), and eyenoises… the paris movie, director Süsanna Schonberg 1994 doc about Tim Berne’s Bloodcount (released with 2 CDs in the Screwgun collection, Seconds), are cases in point. The fact that the Québécois trio simply burns through a program predominated by chestnuts by Dolphy, Waller and others notwithstanding, it is the trio’s Marxist chemistry (that would be Groucho, not Karl) that keeps the viewer glued to the screen. Saxophonist/flutist Jean Derome, grins as if he’s about to spring a well-planned jape; drummer Pierre Tanguay, exudes mirth even when he’s burning down the house; and bassist Normand Guilbeault is the straight man essential to the set-up.
