  • 4. Hmmm dans Phosphor

The fourth release in these live series, offers recordings of five gigs performed in April 2003. Again this turntables duo presents an album full of noise. The opening track is a slow-building climax of white noise with on top of it nice vocal samples and ending in rhythmic noise eruptions. The second track heads off rather carefully with tiny noises (like a wild animal), continued with a rhythmic mechanical pattern. The third and fourth piece, both recorded in Lyon, are in the same vein, built upon crackles, concrete sounds and sharp noises. These noise manipulations are in a constant flow, been changed actively all the time. The music is calm, extreme and harsh at the same time.

Bruiducœur, prières des infidèles dans Phosphor

Written for two narrators, two soloists, to percussionists and a thirteen-piece self-conducted mixed choir, this album is an highly emotional mixture of opera and experimental text declarations. This Montréal-based composer tells a story abot Lui, who is dying, scared and delirious, Elle, who acts as an ironic witness and Choir, who represent the others that will die one day. The interaction beween these groups can be considered Meredith Monk meeting ritual chants and chamber music neeting zen improv acoustics. Such projects can’t be heard often, an interesting mixture of styles and ingredients. Especially the calmer and religious second half of the album is beautiful.

Three Cities in the Life of Dr Norman Bethune dans Phosphor

Norman Bethune was one of North America’s most prominent lung surgeans in Montréal, before he started to fight with the Republican International Brigade in Spain in 1936. Two years later he became a member of Mao Tse Tung’s Communist 8th Army. This album has been dedicated to this man, as Tim Brady used extracts from his letters and poetry of the 1930’s to come up with a modern opera. Michael Donovan’s baritone plays an important role, reciting the long texts, supported by lively piano play and an orchestra.
