After 12 years of existence and 39 records produced, the seminal Montréal new music label Ambiances Magnétiques felt the need to release its first compilation album, Volume 1: La bastringue migratoire. This retrospective CD came out as the label’s main artists (René Lussier, Jean Derome, Joane Hétu and Martin Tétreault, mostly) were about to change their musical approach. After 1996, the bulk of the label’s production will shift from deconstructed rock idioms where humor often plays a central role (Les Granules, Justine, André Duchesne, Jerry Snell}) to introverted free improvisation. So La bastringue migratoire came at the right time, summarizing the label’s pre-1996 sound. All tracks are taken from albums already published — no unreleased material — and thus this CD offers nothing new to the dedicated fan, but the “musique actuelle” neophyte will find it a helpful sampler. Every major act on the label is represented: René Lussier (thrice if one counts the track by his duo Les Granules), Jean Derome, Martin Tétreault, Justine, Évidence, Bruire and André Duchesne, plus a few lesser-known artists such as Geneviève Letarte and Jerry Snell. The booklet includes presentations of every artist on Ambiances Magnétiques.

In May 1999, French bassist Joëlle Léandre was in Montréal for a concert and a recording session with drummer Danielle Palardy Roger (ex-Justine, Les Poules, Wondeur Brass). The result of this encounter was released in early 2000 by Ambiances Magnétiques under the tittle Tricotage (Knits), a feminine title for an album soaked in feminine sensibility. The two improvisers make one with their instruments, Léandre letting sighs and moans escape along the way (like on the beautiful Knit One, Purl Three). The pretentiousness found on Ambiances Magnétiques releases from the same period is absent on this CD; the music goes down to the roots of improvising, taps into the unconscious: a bass that can sound like a drum playing with a delicate drum set that could almost sound melodious. Tricotage is a very organic record, quite sensual at times, and makes an enjoyable listen.

Dix ans apres l’étonnant Vous seriez un ange, l’écrivaine-performeuse-chanteuse Geneviève Letarte effectue un retour bienvenue sur disque et brasse à nouveau le cocotier de la chanson. Si elle privilégie encore un style parlé-chanté, en dix ans de performances, la voix de Letarte a cependant pns une assurance évidente, qui lui permet même d’effectuer sans gêne quelques scats. Musicalement, on nage entre blues dénudé et folk actuel, avec quelques pointes plus rythmées. Encore une fois, Letarte s’est entourée d’habitués de l’écurie Ambiances magnétiques, parmi lesquels le guitariste Claude Fradette occupe un rôle de premier plan. Les musiques, aériennes mais soutenues, servent d’écrin idéal à un langage poétique tantôt trés terre-à-terre tantôt mystique et envoûtant. 3.5/5

Geneviève Letarte est traversée par les mots. Toujours. Des mots qui sont mis au monde dans des romans, des performances, mais aussi des chansons. Justement. Elle lance un second album, Chansons d’un jour. Le premier, Vous seriez un ange, publié il y a 10 ans, avait titillé l’oreille par son travail musical complexe et richement tissé, et signait l’avènement d’une chanteuse hors normes et talentueuse. Madame Letarte pond son œuf quand il est prêt, sans vouloir aller plus vite que la musique. Chansons d’un jour se veut résolument un album de chansons, longuement mijotées avec Claude Fradette, guitariste et arrangeur. Une poésie limpide, doucement empreinte de nostalgie. Une nostalgie heureuse, émanant d’une fille sans regrets et forte de sa vie irradiante. Petites valses, danses légères, mots anodins qui s’épanouissent au jeu des notes déliées par Claude Frodette, à lo guitare, Normond Guilbeoult à la contrebasse, Pierre Tanguay à lo batterie et Serge Boisvert à la trompette.

MK. Orchestrin presents the best of the recent batch. This is presented in a weird sleeve featuring unique use of Velcro buttons! It’s by one Mirko Sabatini, an obscure unknown drummer aka MK. Orchestrin, titled -28+ALIEN! (AM 080 CD) and it’s pretty much the type of thing we’d have expected if Chris Cutler had done a fragmented series of drum excursions in the Art Bears days, making use of motors, plates, springs, rubber bands and the likes, it amounts to that scrap-yard drum-set sound, teetering on the edge of the avant-garde yet never falling over.

Dianne Labrosse takes us on a weird cross-cultural journey with her Petit traité de Sagesse pratique which also features Joane Hétu! Here a cast of ten musicians (the Ambiances magnétiques all-stars, we could call them) perform a sonic mutation suite of works that runs the gamut of modern avant-garde drawing in almost every music you could imagine. Bizarre is too simple a word for it. This is challenging radical stuff that defies any attempt at description!
