Joshua Zubot and Antoine Berthiaume will be at Le Cagibi on Tuesday March 23, 2010 as part of the Mardi spaghetti weekly series for creative music.

On March 24, 2010 Mercredimusics will feature Jean Derome and Isaiah Ceccarelli, at Casa Obscura in Montréal. Always music, silence, listening, music, noise, improvisation, listening and more music.

I am almost entirely won over by this album of trio improvisation. Kiya Tabassian and Ziya Tabassian, first specialized in Persian “classical” music, have been expanding their palette of collaborations for a while. Kiya (string instruments) with Constantinople is building bridges between classical musics from various parts of the world (among other things) while Ziya (percussion) has been drawing closer to avant-jazz and free improvisation. Here, theyare complemented by Pierre-Yves Martel on prepared viola da gamba. Masafat features 12 short, quiet, searching free improvisations. They have exotic accents but are mostly from a unique personal universe. This music is very taking. My only recrimination is that it is a tad bit to homogeneous, which makes the album feel a little too long.

Ritmi di oggetti, the first track on La Notte fa, is an orgy of stripped-down, fuzz-toned rhythm; the second track, Unlisted Card Number, is all textural dub ambient percussion; and the third piece, Paxil Origami Club, sounds like broken-down and refracted disco, with the flashing lights but minus the cheese. And that’s just the first third of the album. Côté and Dontigny piece together their aural constructions from fragments of pop culture with tapes and electronics, cutting up and reassembling samples from sources as diverse as Maurice Ravel, Don Cherry and Ol’ Dirty Bastard into strange and surprisingly accessible electro-dance delights.
