  • October 20, 2007: Bozzini Begins its Montréal Season with a new CD

Wednesday, October 10, 2007 In concert

The Bozzini Quartet is starting its new season with an important event: the CD launch of Canons + Hoquets on Octobre 20, 2007 at Tanna Schulich Hall of McGill University. This will also be the first Montréaler concert of the ensemble for 2007-08. This new project gives voice to two contemporary artists, each strong and distinct, with Howard Skempton’s expansive canons, and Jo Kondo’s continuous hockets.

    Antoine Berthiaume in Voir

“Brève musique”, Réjean Beaucage, Voir, October 4, 2007
    Thursday, October 4, 2007 Press

    Agrégats in The Gazette

“New Music. Newly Released Compact Discs”, Juan Rodriguez, The Gazette, October 4, 2007
    Thursday, October 4, 2007 Press

Pop explodes the avant-garde, and vice versa: both terms are rendered useless by the end of this spectacular album from the deep murk. Violinist and electronic tweaker Del Fabbro, recruited from the musique actuelle scene by Pierre Lapointe for his bestselling Forêt des mal aimés, returns the favour by bringing pop friends (including Lapointe bandleader Philippe Brault on doublebass) to join a tentet including Jean Derome (flyé flutes), Luzio Altobelli (accordion), Sheila Hannigan (corrosive cello), Pierre Tanguay (percussion, tools) in this densely textured project. Agrégat’s tightly structured tunes ooze melodramatic film noir music wallowing in shadows, circus music escaping its cage, fright night at the children’s hour, and twisted fanfares. Not a genteel note is to be found, but panache galore informs this sonically superb in-your-face production. (5/5)
