Le projet que porte Michel F Côté depuis 2005 — parallèlement à ses autres prestations — à savoir Mecha Fixes Clock, en est à sa 4^e réalisation. Et cela reste l’une des propositions les plus intéressantes du moment dans la production québécoise. Parce que l’auditeur exigeant y trouve la plupart des ingrédients qui nourrissent son paysage sonore. Improvisations judicieuses, délicatesse des interventions instrumentales, création d’une ambiance prenante, à l’intérieur de trames préconstruites, des lignes mélodiques captivantes délicatement perverties. Le tout avec une maitrise de la mise en œuvre d’un album plus ou moins conceptuel, déclinant des approches liées à l’activité aéronautique… D’où l’impression de vivre un curieux voyage en apesanteur dans une sorte de no man’s land aérien, par moment oppressant, à l’image de la pochette et de son armada d’avions, l’étrangeté était symbolisée par la présence d’une dame masquée par un attirail artéro-veineux qui renvoie un peu à l’univers de Valérian (la BD!) à moins que cela ne soit celle de Cosmik Roger.

Three new releases from Éric Normand’s label Tour de Bras. Two of them have the trumpet of Elwood Epps and the drums of Michel F Côté in common. Both are reputed players in the Montreal scene.

Pink Saliva is an improvising trio completed by Alexandre St-Onge on bass and laptop. They present three improvised pieces recorded live in November 2010. Unpolished improvisations, with fine playing by Elwood Epps.

In a more sophisticated context we hear Epps again in Côté’s project Mecha Fixes Clocks, together with: Philippe Lauzier (alto sax, bass clarinet), Epps (trumpet), Jean René (alto violin), Pierre-Yves Martel (viola da gamba, feedback), Bernard Falaise (guitar), Guillaume Dostaler (piano) and Côté (drums, feedback, and microphones). Again a typical Côté-release. Music of a dream-like nature. Open soundscapes in the background, with jazz-inspired instruments in the forefront, although there is no real forefront and background. The music evokes a sense of space. The music drips in your ears along unpredictable patterns and at the same time it all seems to fit.

Tour de Bras is also the driving force behind the festival Rencontres de Musiques Spontanées, with the large improvisational collective ensemble called GGRIL (Grand groupe régional d’improvisation libérée) as a returning act. Earlier they released an album with Evan Parker as a guest. This ensemble of 14 musicians under direction of Éric Normand, creates fine textures, that move seemingly independent from each other. Their interactions make you wonder what is happening here, and that is a good sign. The improvisations, pressed on red vinyl, are also surprisingly coloured due to an unusual line-up. I hear accordeon, electric guitars, percussion, strings, etc.

Tour de Bras nennt sich ein kanadisches Label, das sich komplett der improvisierten Musik verschrieben hat, und das darüber hinaus Konzertreihen, Workshops und ein zweijährlich stattfindendes Festival veranstaltet. Gefördert werden soll damit die Impro-Musik in der Region, wobei mit Region hier die Provinz Quebéc gemeint ist, mit 8 Millionen Einwohnern der besiedlungsdichteste Fleck in Kanada. Nicht unbedingt, was wir unter einer»Provinz«verstehen.

Eines der Lieblingsprojekte des Labels ist Le GGRIL (steht für Grand groupe régional d’improvisation libérée), ein Live-Impro Ensemble aus einer Kleinstadt im Osten von Quebéc, das auf eine mittlerweile sechsjährigen Spielpraxis in eher schriller Zusammensetzung (etwa zwei Akkordeons, ein elektrischer und ein Kontrabass, Tuba und Fagott, sowie Violinen, Percussions und diverse Bläser) zurückblicken kann. Eine sehr feine Demonstration dieser Konstellation bietet die CD»Vivaces«von 2012, realisiert in 13-köpfiger Besetzung und offensichtlich doch nicht komplett free umgesetzt. Laut Labeleigendefinition handelt es sich aber ohnehin um»musique neuve et d’occasion«, was eigentlich einen sehr schönen Begriff in die Improvisationsmusik einführt, eben den der Okkasion. Bei uns leider viel zu einschlägig als günstige Gelegenheit oder gutes Geschäft besetzt, doch im Französischen ist die»occasion«viel näher am Begriff des Ereignishaften. Musik als Ereignis, für die Ort und Umstände und natürlich auch der Zeitpunkt des Entstehens essentiell sind. Zu diesen Umständen gehört auf»Vivaces«ein strukturiertes Miteinander einzelner Ensembleteile, was zusätzlich für eine angenehme Abwechslung gegenüber der sonst viel zu häufigen Monotonie im Improgenre sorgt. Auch der regionale Einschlag, der vor allem durch die beiden Akkordeons ins Spiel kommt und immer wieder Assoziationen zu einem außer Rand und Band geratenen Chanson-Abend unter Avantgardisten weckt, machen»Vivaces«zu einer charmanten Angelegenheit.

Phasen und Flughäfen

Zwei Jahre zuvor zeigte ein Teil des Le GGRIL-Ensembles, dass man auch ganz klassisch im Sinne der Improvisationsmusik kann. Auf»Transition de Phase«geben sich die zwei Saxophonisten Jim Denley und Philippe Lauzier gemeinsam mit Pierre-Yves Martel (Violakorpus und Elektronik), Kim Myhr (Akustikgitarre) und Éric Normand (Bass) die Ehre. Die fünf Herren gehen es weitaus introspektiver an und betreiben zugleich das Spiel gegen den instrumentalen Strich, also Überblasen, Schnattern, Kratzen, Bürsten usw. — eben alles was man tun kann, um seinem Instrument unerwartete Noises zu entlocken. Auch diese Übung ist prächtig gelungen, wenn auch nicht ganz so klangfarbenprächtig wie im großen Ensemble.

Auf»Beau comme un aéroport«treffen wir die Herren Philippe Lauzier und Pierre-Yves Martel wieder. Gemeinsam mit fünf weiteren Herren haben sie offenbar beschlossen, unter dem halbwegs bescheuerten Gruppennamen Mecha fixes clock eine fast schon traumwandlerisch sichere Gratwanderung zwischen Impro und Jazz einzuspielen. Hier stimmt fast alles, hier liebt man fast alles, egal aus welchem Lager man kommt. Natürlich schlägt das Pendel in die eine oder andere Richtung aus, mal spielen Saxophon und Trompete herrlich trockene Phrasen, während die Kompagnons fröhlich dagegen bürsten, dann wieder knackst und noiselt es, bis das Piano unverfroren ein süßlich-minimalistisches Thema einstreut, das aber dann ebenso fröhlich wieder zerhäckselt wird. Und mitunter kommt sogar noch ein Beat dazu und man vertschüsst sich zeitweilig ins Sphärische. Sehr fein ist diese CD geworden, ein Leckerbissen für Quereinsteiger ebenso wie Genrefans. Auch toll: die außerordentlich hübsch gestaltete CD-Hülle.

Vinylporno

A propos besonders hübsch. Wir kehren zurück zum aktuellen Release von»Tour de Bras«, der unter dem Titel»Combines!«wieder das komplette Ensemble von Le GGRIL vereint. Nur dieses Mal auf Platte — und zwar auf knallrotem Vinyl, das in einer durchsichtigen Hülle, die natürlich mehr zeigt als versteckt. Ein Vinylporno, wenn man so will — und entsprechend geil anzusehen.»Combines!«wirkt streckenweise wie die Quintessenz aller bisher besprochenen CDs. Das strukturierte Ensemblespiel ist wieder da (ein Stück funktioniert als Improvisationsspiel, ein anderes ist für zwei Dirigenten ausgelegt), die disziplinierte Zurückhaltung, die in fast jazzige Reminiszenz gleitet (irgendwo zwischen spätem Gil Evans und frühem Cecil Taylor, aber wie gesagt nur fast), und natürlich das franko-kanadische Lokalkolorit. Alles zusammen ergibt eine hübsch spannungsgeladene, immer wieder fordernde, aber auch belohnende Ensembleimprovisation, die wirklich wärmstens empfohlen werden kann.

Ach ja,»Tour des Bras«heißt übersetzt»Armumfang«, kann aber auch»Was das Zeug hält«heißen, je nach dem. Wer danach googelt, findet jedenfalls vor allem tätowierte Oberarme von einschlägigen Muskelpaketen.

These two CDs, recently released on Éric Normand’s Tour de Bras imprint, have in common the trumpet of Elwood Epps and the drums of Michel F Côté, both players dynamic forces on Montréal’s improvised and musique actuelle scenes. Côté’s work, both as a composer and drummer, is always playful—he never saw a groove he didn’t want to mess with. Epps has been ubiquitous on the Montréal scene since arriving from Guelph about six or seven years back, and his playing, emphasizing breath control and dynamic subtleties, becomes stronger all the time.

[…] The current iteration of Mecha Fixes Clocks, one of Côté’s many ongoing projects, consists of Philippe Lauzier (alto sax, bass clarinet), Epps (trumpet), Jean René (alto violin), Pierre-Yves Martel (viola da gamba, feedback), Bernard Falaise (guitar), Guillaume Dostaler (piano), and Côté (drums, feedback, and microphones).

Recorded at Côté’s preferred studio, Montréal’s Studio 270, Beau comme un aéroport is a suite of songs, the titles of which allude to air travel (se maintenir en l’air coûte que coûte, turbulence du dimanche, au terme de l’ascension, petite perte d’altitude). We do not normally think of airports as beautiful, however, and the music does not seem strictly programmatic, but one can find musical analogues with air travel if one chooses to do so. The middle section of Turbulence du dimanche, a rather tranquil piece, is dominated by a line of long notes from Epps, and Côté clattering on toms. (Perhaps Sundays are known for having very little turbulence.) Atlas des brumes has an African feel to the beat, bass droning underneath, trumpet line of long, purely played notes, Dostaler vamping sparely. Tour des anges begins with Epps and Dostaler playing solo lines before Côté enters with a splash of cymbal followed by a rising burst of feedback, which, with Dostaler’s offbeat phrasing, creates a sense of impending doom. Egalité de la résistance des ailes has a gamelan-feel built around Martel’s viola da gamba and Lauzier’s alto, a polyrhythmic play. Sur le siège d’a côté 22F has Epps blowing air through his trumpet to simulate snoring. Ostinato aierienne is a gentle, peaceful ending, which one wishes all flights to have.

I haven’t travelled enough in my life to know what makes an airport beautiful (the album’s title translates to “Beautiful like an airport”), but I have listened to enough demanding music to say that Beau comme un aéroport is a beautiful record. Percussionist Michel F Côté is back with his most “musique actuelle”-like project Mecha Fixes Clock, which consists this time around of Philippe Lauzier, Pierre-Yves Martel, Elwood Epps, Jean René, Guillaume Dostaler, and Bernard Falaise — a nice blend of household names and young go-getters. The album consists in a suite of short pieces offering an excellent example of what Québécois “musique actuelle” has matured into: shapeshifting, finely-crafted and subtle music with a buoyant, playful side. Refined compositions blurring the lines between fixed notation and improvisation. Music that will keep you asking for more.

Le projet mené par le percussionniste Michel F Côté fait généralement dans l’abstraction «actualiste» lente, et ce quatrième enregistrement ne fait pas exception; on est dans l’exploration de textures et le quasi-méditatif. L’ensemble de musiciens fait preuve d’une grande cohérence dans le dépouillement, chacun jouant la retenue, la mesure et la parcimonie dans un incessant ballet de rythmes hachurés. Avec Guillaume Dostaler (piano), Elwood Epps (trompette), Bernard Falaise (guitare), Philippe Lauzier (sax alto, clarinette basse), Pierre-Yves Martel (viole de gambe) et Jean René (alto), MFC dessine une musique en quelque sorte sans conséquence, pleine de crépitements et de frottis, et qui n’annonce rien de plus urgent qu’un après-midi dans un hamac.
