Papa Boa was formed from the meeting of three prolific Montréal-based musicians, Bernard Falaise, Rémi Leclerc and Frédéric Roverselli, with Pierre Labbé joining them later on. “Tête à queue,” their first album, features an impressive list of guest collaborators and offers a wild bouquet of varied and surprising songs, where oddball explorations lead to some of the most explosive and original musical hybrids heard recently. Mostly improvisational, their songs take advantage of sampling and other studio trickery, as raw instrumental material is captured, manipulated, and reorganised using various digital tools. On top of this, new improvisations are added to the mix to enrich or confront this reshaped material. The result is a collection of music which is both joyful, disconcerting, and immaculately produced.

Papa Boa are another grand display of the talent that the Canadian avant-garde/out-rock/post-rock/whatever-it’s-called-this-week scene can call on. Falaise, Labbé, Leclerc, Roverselli and guests — most notably female vocalists Monpetit and Thério — have produced a widely varied selection of musics, marrying indie pop, smooth grooves, distortion, folk, eastern soundtracks, no wave guitar skronk, introspective soundscapes and wild jazz elements perfectly. Many of the tracks have an infectious rhythm which should get feet tapping all over the dance-reluctant avant world. Some of this is reminiscent of those 1980s Belgian discomforting popsters The Honeymoon Killers, who also mixed jazz, pop, wobbly space noise and chansons to equal effect. So diverse is this stew that even bits of what could be Einsturzende Neubauten and John Zorn can be detected. As you can see, this is a very hard disc to pin down, but what I do know is that it is imaginative, ambitious and all-but-perfectly realised. A winner. How much more quality product can the Canadian scene produce

Papa Boa explores the art of noise, and speaks French while doing it. This art-punk free jazz arises from group improvisation later torn about and reassembled into a Frankenstein audio collage. Tête à queue juggernauts about like an unruly creation. Rock- and R&B-like rhythms emerge in the sometimes-harsh finished product. Making up the group is guitarist Bernard Falaise (Farniente Salon, Miriodor), percussionist and wacky brass band drummer Remi Leclerc (l’Orkestre des pas perdus, Miriodor), bassist and keyboardist Frederic Roverselli and Pierre Labbé on saxes, flutes and didgeridoo. Numerous guests form the Montréal musique-actuelle scene help out. Salient in these collaborations is the dulcet voices of actress-singers Marie-Hélène Montpetit and Marie-Jo Thério singing in French. The juxtapositions of these mellifluous tones in that beautiful language against the alternating rhythmic or abrasive constructions pull it together. (4 out of 5)

If your listening tastes run to punk rock or wilder jazz, Tête à queue will be the best and most enjoyable opportunity to get your foot in the Ambiances Magnétiques door, figuratively speaking. This musique-actuelle ensemble, based in Montréal, deals heavily in improvisation
