Tour de Bras nennt sich ein kanadisches Label, das sich komplett der improvisierten Musik verschrieben hat, und das darüber hinaus Konzertreihen, Workshops und ein zweijährlich stattfindendes Festival veranstaltet. Gefördert werden soll damit die Impro-Musik in der Region, wobei mit Region hier die Provinz Quebéc gemeint ist, mit 8 Millionen Einwohnern der besiedlungsdichteste Fleck in Kanada. Nicht unbedingt, was wir unter einer»Provinz«verstehen.

Eines der Lieblingsprojekte des Labels ist Le GGRIL (steht für Grand groupe régional d’improvisation libérée), ein Live-Impro Ensemble aus einer Kleinstadt im Osten von Quebéc, das auf eine mittlerweile sechsjährigen Spielpraxis in eher schriller Zusammensetzung (etwa zwei Akkordeons, ein elektrischer und ein Kontrabass, Tuba und Fagott, sowie Violinen, Percussions und diverse Bläser) zurückblicken kann. Eine sehr feine Demonstration dieser Konstellation bietet die CD»Vivaces«von 2012, realisiert in 13-köpfiger Besetzung und offensichtlich doch nicht komplett free umgesetzt. Laut Labeleigendefinition handelt es sich aber ohnehin um»musique neuve et d’occasion«, was eigentlich einen sehr schönen Begriff in die Improvisationsmusik einführt, eben den der Okkasion. Bei uns leider viel zu einschlägig als günstige Gelegenheit oder gutes Geschäft besetzt, doch im Französischen ist die»occasion«viel näher am Begriff des Ereignishaften. Musik als Ereignis, für die Ort und Umstände und natürlich auch der Zeitpunkt des Entstehens essentiell sind. Zu diesen Umständen gehört auf»Vivaces«ein strukturiertes Miteinander einzelner Ensembleteile, was zusätzlich für eine angenehme Abwechslung gegenüber der sonst viel zu häufigen Monotonie im Improgenre sorgt. Auch der regionale Einschlag, der vor allem durch die beiden Akkordeons ins Spiel kommt und immer wieder Assoziationen zu einem außer Rand und Band geratenen Chanson-Abend unter Avantgardisten weckt, machen»Vivaces«zu einer charmanten Angelegenheit.

Phasen und Flughäfen

Zwei Jahre zuvor zeigte ein Teil des Le GGRIL-Ensembles, dass man auch ganz klassisch im Sinne der Improvisationsmusik kann. Auf»Transition de Phase«geben sich die zwei Saxophonisten Jim Denley und Philippe Lauzier gemeinsam mit Pierre-Yves Martel (Violakorpus und Elektronik), Kim Myhr (Akustikgitarre) und Éric Normand (Bass) die Ehre. Die fünf Herren gehen es weitaus introspektiver an und betreiben zugleich das Spiel gegen den instrumentalen Strich, also Überblasen, Schnattern, Kratzen, Bürsten usw. — eben alles was man tun kann, um seinem Instrument unerwartete Noises zu entlocken. Auch diese Übung ist prächtig gelungen, wenn auch nicht ganz so klangfarbenprächtig wie im großen Ensemble.

Auf»Beau comme un aéroport«treffen wir die Herren Philippe Lauzier und Pierre-Yves Martel wieder. Gemeinsam mit fünf weiteren Herren haben sie offenbar beschlossen, unter dem halbwegs bescheuerten Gruppennamen Mecha fixes clock eine fast schon traumwandlerisch sichere Gratwanderung zwischen Impro und Jazz einzuspielen. Hier stimmt fast alles, hier liebt man fast alles, egal aus welchem Lager man kommt. Natürlich schlägt das Pendel in die eine oder andere Richtung aus, mal spielen Saxophon und Trompete herrlich trockene Phrasen, während die Kompagnons fröhlich dagegen bürsten, dann wieder knackst und noiselt es, bis das Piano unverfroren ein süßlich-minimalistisches Thema einstreut, das aber dann ebenso fröhlich wieder zerhäckselt wird. Und mitunter kommt sogar noch ein Beat dazu und man vertschüsst sich zeitweilig ins Sphärische. Sehr fein ist diese CD geworden, ein Leckerbissen für Quereinsteiger ebenso wie Genrefans. Auch toll: die außerordentlich hübsch gestaltete CD-Hülle.

Vinylporno

A propos besonders hübsch. Wir kehren zurück zum aktuellen Release von»Tour de Bras«, der unter dem Titel»Combines!«wieder das komplette Ensemble von Le GGRIL vereint. Nur dieses Mal auf Platte — und zwar auf knallrotem Vinyl, das in einer durchsichtigen Hülle, die natürlich mehr zeigt als versteckt. Ein Vinylporno, wenn man so will — und entsprechend geil anzusehen.»Combines!«wirkt streckenweise wie die Quintessenz aller bisher besprochenen CDs. Das strukturierte Ensemblespiel ist wieder da (ein Stück funktioniert als Improvisationsspiel, ein anderes ist für zwei Dirigenten ausgelegt), die disziplinierte Zurückhaltung, die in fast jazzige Reminiszenz gleitet (irgendwo zwischen spätem Gil Evans und frühem Cecil Taylor, aber wie gesagt nur fast), und natürlich das franko-kanadische Lokalkolorit. Alles zusammen ergibt eine hübsch spannungsgeladene, immer wieder fordernde, aber auch belohnende Ensembleimprovisation, die wirklich wärmstens empfohlen werden kann.

Ach ja,»Tour des Bras«heißt übersetzt»Armumfang«, kann aber auch»Was das Zeug hält«heißen, je nach dem. Wer danach googelt, findet jedenfalls vor allem tätowierte Oberarme von einschlägigen Muskelpaketen.

Those who get thrilled in recalling orchestral masterpieces such as Strings With Evan Parker (Emanem) will find something quite flavorsome to chew here, though not on an identical level of artistic strength. GGRIL is a collective from Rimouski, Québec, described as the “home big band” of the Tour de Bras label. Exclusively composed of musicians of different ages and experience based in the Lower St. Lawrence region, over the years the ensemble has played with several leading lights of the improv landscape. This particular set was taped in April 2011 after a brief clinic led by the English master of swirling reeds.

Whereas the concert starts with a completely free piece — Semis — in which the players waste no time in finding contrapuntal stratagems by reducing the toe-dipping procedures to the required minimum, the subsequent tracks Bouturage and Marcottage are directed, respectively, by Parker and violinist Raphaël Arsenault. Still, the music remains entirely conceived on the spot, showing a wealth of veins and colors and an idiosyncratic sense of humor (a gorgeously wacky tuba solo — courtesy of Gabriel Rivest — at the beginning of Bouturage is my overall favorite snippet of the entire disc). Electric guitars and bass furnish the action with the right quantities of charged rush when needed; a couple of accordions warrant substrata of folk echoes that sound preposterous and suggestive at once.

The attendance of guest trombonist Scott Thomson adds fuel to the fire in the “melodically bizarre” department, thus balancing the more overt tendency to seriousness dictated by two violins, a clarinet and an acoustic bass. A propulsive consistency is not missing, and — judging by the bursts of audience laughs sporadically heard — a theatrical component must have been applied during the exhibition. Parker’s soprano and tenor work just fine without exceeding any limit as he immerses himself in the improvisational ebb and flow with flexible modesty. A few attentive spins and you’ll see that there are some values to remember in this totally respectable release.

Le Grand Groupe Régional d’Improvisation Libérée (GGRIL) est un ensemble fondé il y a maintenant sept ans par des musiciens de Rimouski, une petite ville de l’Est du Québec située à des centaines de kilomètres des grands centres urbains. Par la constance et l’implication de ses membres, le groupe contribue à faire de sa région une plaque tournante des musiques libres au Québec. En plus de ses propres créations, le GGRIL a travaillé avec plusieurs compositeurs invités pour des ateliers ou des créations: Jean Derome, Joëlle Léandre, Danielle Palardy Roger, René Lussier et d’autres. Vivaces a été enregistré en concert, à Rimouski, suite à une courte séance de travail avec Evan Parker. Le CD reprend l’intégralité du concert, dans l’ordre et sans montage, afin de préserver la spontanéité de cette brève rencontre avec un des pères de la «free music». La musique est totalement improvisée, mais des gestes simples sont utilisés par Evan Parker et Raphaël Arsenault, afin de créer des mouvements de masse et de donner des directions à la musique. On retrouve dans ce collectif Éric Normand (elb), en quelque sorte le coordonateur du label dirigé par Eric Bras. La première pièce est laissé à la libre improvisation des douze musiciens avec, en interventions non dirigistes mais contrôlées, les saxophones d’Evan, au soprano ou au ténor. La seconde pièce, la plus longue, est elle organisée par le britannique, tout au moins dans sa construction. L’édifice s’élève peu à peu, avec cette attention toute particulière du «professeur» malgré lui qui donne la parole à chacun, l’expérience du maitre profitant d’autant plus que les instruments sont variés et divers, maelström dans lequel évoluent violon, trombone, accordéons (diatonique et chromatique, qui interviennent à juste titre pour ponctuer de manière colorée les phrases musicales des autres instrumentistes), et aussi un tuba grognon à souhait qui met en valeur les interventions plus légères des clarinettes. L’orchestre se situe quand même à un niveau supérieur à celui d’une masterclass, savant mélange de professionnels et d’amateurs que ce disque très réussi permettra de mieux faire connaître. Et, entre nous, la relève est bien là. Sachons l’écouter, même si elle nécessite un petit coup de pouce d’artiste, disons, confirmé…

Certains sont professionnels, d’autres sont amateurs: le GGRIL, basé à Rimouki, petite ville de l’est du Québec, dispose d’une dizaine de forces vives. Evan Parker, après Joëlle Léandre ou Jean Derome, est ce soir leur invité.

Tout commence avec Semis, improvisation collective, courbaturant une masse épaisse, sobrement perforée par le soprano puis le ténor du britannique. Le concert se poursuit avec Bouturage, dirigé par Evan Parker. Débutant en douceur, la conduction de Parker posera quelques sûres balises (motif rythmique s’accélérant, modulations, surgissement d’une clarinette intrépide, accents répétitifs) avant d’encourager un intense duo d’accordéons. La dernière pièce, dirigée par le violoniste Raphaël Arsenault, laissera le saxophoniste — ici au ténor — évoluer en soliste au sein d’une improvisation anxiogène, ombrageuse, inquiétante. Oui, une belle soirée pour tout le monde.

Adding another voice to an established improvising ensemble is more precarious than it seems. With a group having worked out strategies allowing for individual expression within a larger context — and without notated cues — the visitor (s) must be original without unbalancing the interface. Luckily the sessions here demonstrate successful applications.

Invited to Rimouski, Quebec to give a workshop, British saxophonist Evan Parker also participated in Vivaces (Tour de Bras TDB9006 CD), recorded with the 12-piece Grand groupe régional d’improvisation libérée (GGRIL) . Made up of players from different musical backgrounds living in the Lower Saint-Lawrence region, GGRIL is distinctive in that the group includes two electric guitarists, an electric bassist plus two accordionists, but only three horn players. Using these circumstances to best advantage, these tracks, alternately directed by Parker and GGRIL violinist Raphaël Arsensault, employ the accordionists’ tremolo pulsing and sweeping electronic oscillations to thicken the bottom. With upturned slices from the strings and barnyard cries from the squeeze boxes, two clarinets and the tuba, it’s often Parker’s restrained undertone that gives a linear shape to the improvisation. The best example of this is Marcottage that manages to include contributions from nearly every GGRILer. As Parker pushes forward with staccato split tones he’s backed by sympathetic grace notes from fellow guest, trombonist Scott Thomson, and skittering, slurring accordion lines. Triangle pings signal a timbral shift and presage a ferocious solo from the saxophonist. Band members’ responses range from rebounding percussion ratamacues, crackling electronic runs from the guitars and bass plus one accordionist sounding a faux balladic line as the other pumps powerfully. Finally the mass cacophony downshifts to a satisfying connective rumble.

If you are a fan of longer, exploratory forms and large-group ensembles, this will be a very rewarding disc. The three songs on this recording display great willingness to explore the depths of each improvisation. The mixture of sounds in loose rhythm that open Vivaces gives a hint to the surprising textures at work in this ambitious recording. These are accomplished musicians, and the interactions between them progress in surprising ways. At times the structures remind me of Parker’s work in the Global Unity Orchestra, and like those recordings, the music here is consistently rewarding and occasionally difficult. The array of instruments and sounds present in each track creates a sonic map that shows us how the conductor’s thinking progresses and still manages moments of great lyrical beauty. We hear accordions, violins, voice, tuba, guitar and of course Evan Parker’s saxophone.

The final third of opening track reaches a brilliant set of surprises and some magnificent saxophone work by Parker, but mostly he is conducting on the first two tracks. And in many ways the conductor is the star here, with Parker directing the sound by dropping instruments in or out of the music, and extending certain tones by bringing them to the forefront. As the second track, Boutrage, crescendos with a wonderfully demented and circus-like rhythm (yes, the tuba!) you feel the full potential of the improvisational large group. The music alternates between rhythmic propulsion and lyrical, floating tones, often involving the accordions. Organic textures provided by violin, voice and accordions often bring a very welcome dreamlike quality to passages in the recording.

The second track covers so much territory, from lush to spare, from hypnotic to jarring, that it alone acts as a large-group improvisational workshop. It’s this 25 minute track that most intrigues me, especially because the musicians never seem to run out of new territory and the music often takes on a mind-altering quality. During the third track Parker’s playing provides space and melody for the other players to work off, and they often enough find sublime moments behind him.

It’s been a long time since I’ve listened to a live recording with so many textures on it, and all this in only three songs. Congratulations to the GGRIL and to Evan Parker on this fine recording. The disc is nicely mixed and its live quality adds to that tightrope, highwire tension, that feeling that the musicians could slip up, take a wrong turn, disassemble. But of course there are no wrong turns, only opportunities for the next turn. Vivaces is a blueprint of sorts, a how-to for groups exploring large group improvisations. As a recording it is fascinating listening, and the GGRIL project is an excellent model for the development of a regional avant garde.

Pour des raisons souvent aussi économiques qu’esthétiques, l’improvisation se pratique bien plus en petite formation qu’en orchestre à l’heure actuelle. C’est certainement pourquoi je n’avais pas entendu d’improvisation collective, dirigée ou non, mais sous forme orchestrale, depuis maintenant pas mal de temps. C’est donc plutôt avec plaisir que j’ai découvert le GGRIL, accompagné ici d’Evan Parker et de Scott Thomson, un orchestre de 11 musiciens québécois réunis autour d’Éric Normand. Je ne sais pas vraiment si l’initiative de ce projet lui revient, mais Vivaces a néanmoins été publié sur son propre label, et il est le seul musicien que je connaisse à l’intérieur de cet orchestre. Côté instrument, on trouve deux violonistes, deux clarinettistes et un percussionniste, deux guitares et une basse électriques, deux accordéons, un tuba et un trombone, ainsi que les saxophones soprano et ténor d’Evan Parker.

Ma première surprise en écoutant Vivaces fut tout d’abord l’absence notoire de saxophonistes (hormis Evan Parker, mais qu’on ne peut considérer comme un membre régulier de cet orchestre), et c’est peut-être la première fois que j’entends un orchestre d’improvisation libre où ne se côtoient pas tous les types de saxophones, qu’on pense seulement à l’orchestre d’Alan Silva aussi bien qu’au Globe Unity Orchestra. Fait peut-être anecdotique étant donné la présence d’Evan, mais je ne peux m’empêcher de le signaler étant donné mon amour pour cet instrument…

La deuxième chose qui m’étonne, en comparaison surtout avec les deux orchestres précités, c’est la facilité avec laquelle s’écoute ces improvisations, et la joie présente dans ces improvisations, deux éléments qui rapprochent le GGRIL du côté de l’ICP plus que des deux précédents orchestres. En tout cas, les improvisations (dirigées par Evan Parker sur la seconde piste, et Raphaël Arsenault sur la troisième, ou totalement libres) sont plutôt massives, sans pour autant manquer d’aération. On se croirait d’ailleurs assez souvent à une séance de sound-painting, notamment sur la troisième piste, qui est peut-être la meilleure du fait qu’Evan Parker assume la fonction de soliste durant son intégralité, mais également grâce à la direction assez fracturée et originale d’Arsenault…. Plus denses qu’intenses, il ne s’agit pas de produire le plus fort volume sonore, ou de multiplier des couches criardes, mais plutôt de construire des pièces où s’empilent des blocs sonores massifs, assez conséquents et souvent énergiques tout de même. Des improvisations pleines de spontanéité, de liberté, et d’écoute, dirigées de manière à ne jamais fatiguer et à nettement entrecouper les différents tableaux. L’improvisation libre marque très fortement cet orchestre, qui n’est cependant pas forcément rigide et n’exclut pas de ses improvisations des lignes mélodiques, des ostinatos, des cycles rythmiques, différentes combinaisons instrumentales et certains autres éléments rejetés parfois trop systématiquement par les européens.

Pour l’édition 2011 des Rencontres de musiques spontanées, le Grand groupe d’improvisation régionale libérée avait invité nul autre que le grand saxophoniste-improvisateur Evan Parker. Vivaces documente le concert qui a résulté de cette association. Trois improvisations: une libre, une dirigée par Parker et une dernière dirigée par Raphaël Arsenault. Impossible de ne pas penser au London Improvisers Orchestra en entendant cette masse sonore (11 musiciens rimouskois, plus Parker et le tromboniste Scott Thomson) se déployer, réagir et interagir. La prise de son est ambiante, pas parfaite, mais satisfaisante. Après tout, c’est un rare titre d’Evan Parker à paraître sur une étiquette québécoise!
