Sang 9 ou vingt jeunes et iconoclastes formations québécoises dénichées par les joyeux trublions d’Ambiances Magnétiques. Heureuse compilation.

Cette compilation de bonne tenue est québécoise, Joane Hétu en étant la productrice. Il s’agit donc d’un aperçu de jeunes créateurs (sang neuf) et ils sont 20. À l’écoute de cet agréable objet, deux constats: le Québec semble en pleine forme, et en ce qui concerne les groupes et artistes présentés, défenseurs de couleurs capables de résister aux modes électroniques qui laminent actuellement les diversités culturelles (je fais référence au minimalisme mal compris qui encombre les sillons). Vitalité, donc et grande qualité technique. Dans l’ordre des plages: In Vitro, Concorde crash, The Fighting Koalas, Dickie’s Nodan Levesky, Pascal Desjardins et Frédéric Léonard, Mélanie Auclair, Face dans l’dash, Tomgat, Karèya, Malarafe, Cléo Palacio-Quintin et Pascal Boudreault, Jocelyn Doctor Tellier, Copromélomanie, James Schidlowsky, Hiatus, Tutu Combo, André Marceau, l’Hexacorde, Bobok, Arborisationterminale.

Certes, quelques-uns (très peu) sont demeurés collés aux années 70 et à leurs néo-jazz-rockeries. Mais la tendance bruitiste paraconcrète est en grande forme (comme l’étonnante Mélanie Auclair).

Pendant ses vingt premières années d’existence, le collectif éditait principalement les réalisations de ses membres, à la rigueur celles de certains de leurs collaborateurs occasionnels. Ce n’est qu’au tournant du millénalre que peu à peu Ambiances Magnétiques décida d’ouvrir son catalogue à de nouvelles entités. C’est ainsi que l’auditeur découvrit peu à peu des musiciens tels que Mirko Sabatini, Bull/Heikalo, des formations comme Zucchini, certains déjà présents sur d’autres labels peu distribués (Sylvie Chénard, Lee Pui Ming, Lori Freedman…).

Plutôt que de sortir une énième compilation des œuvres plus ou moins inédites des artistes «maison», la dernière compilation s’attache donc, tout normalement, à faire découvrir un aspect du foisonnement musical de la province francophone. Probablement pas exhaustif, Sang 9 rassemble une vingtaine de formations qui émargent aux musiques divergentes. La dominante semble être le style proche des duos ou trios de musiques improvisées bruitistes, inspirées des Granules, par exemple (Pascal Desjardins & Frédéric Léonard) ou des bidouillages à la Tétreault (Face dans l’dash). Quelques formations utilisent toutefois des phrasés d’essence plus jazz (Torngat, Malarafe)…

Mais l’écoute d’une seule traite de l’ensemble des titres ne permet pas — c’est le lot de la plupart des compilations — d’entrer pleinement dans l’univers respectif de chaque proposition et l’auditeur, selon son état d’esprit du moment, ne retiendra qu’une ou deux propositions qui d’emblée le feront réagir. Je citerai personnellement In Vitro pour ses sonorités d’harmonica traitées, créant une atmosphére quelque peu étrange ou encore le duo Cléo Palacio Quintin & Pascal Boudreault, avec leur radioglyphe et les sons de flûte transformés par l’ordinateur.

Sang 9 reste cependant un témoignage intéressant de la relève (générationnelle?) qui s’opére autour de Montréal.

Ambiances Magnétiques consacrent justement une de ses récentes productions à un musicien présent sur Sang 9. Guido Del Fabbro y apparaissait au sein de Concorde Crash. Carré de sable est une œuvre soliste dans laquelle le traval du violon est confronté à divers instruments, genre tourne-disque ou machine à café. Le bidouillage y est la règle à travers raclement de cordes et autres bruitages plus ou moins percussifs, mais non exclusivement, certains titres, courts, offrant une sorte de respiration mélodique. Les pièces les plus intéressantes sont toutefois celles qui combinent les deux approches, telle «Drimarni» dans laquelle émarge l’un des deux invités Pierre Emmanuel Poizat à la clarinette basse ou dans les derniers titres aux couches sonores plus denses. Carré de sable se révéle intéressant en particulier pour le savoir-faire de Guido Del Fabbro, qui mêle adroitement un aspect ludique — le côté bac à sable? — et une volonté créatrice.

Pierre Tanguay est lui devenu un pilier du collectif. Sa batterie, ses percussions donnent la réplique à Jean Derome (Plinc! Plonc!) ou à Lussier {les deux volets de La vie qui bat), sans oubiler son délicieux et pétillant album solo, La musique de mon disque. En s’associant dans La boulezaille au souffleur Pierre Langevin (clarinette, flûte, cornemuse, chalumeau, chifonie(?)…), que l’on a pu découvrir aux côtés de René Lussier dans Tabula Rasa (La Tribu Trib21570), il renouvelle une approche intégrant la diversité de son inspiration. Cette propension à marier divers styles trouve un partenaire idéal en Pierre Langevin, lequel passe allégrement d’un contexte folk à un travail plus expérimental de ses instruments.

Dass die musique actuelle in Quebec nicht nur von den längst etablierten namen zehrt, zeigt die compilation Sanq 9 (DAME 2003). Hier tauchen gleich 20 lokale projekte auf, die den bisher unemhörten reichtum unter der eisbergspitze verkörpem. Vertreten sind die soloacts Kareya, Copromélomanie, James Schidlowsky und André Marceau, die duos Pascal Desjardins & Frédéric Léonard, Cléo Palacio-Quintin & Pascal Boudreault und Arborisationterminale, die trios Mélanie Auclair und Jocelyn Doctor Tellier, Face dans l’dash und Tutu Combo, die quartette In vitro, The Fighting Koalas, Dickie’S Nodan Levesky, Torngat und Malarafe, das quintett bobok, das sextett L’hexacorde, das septett Hiatus und mit den plunderphonischen Abräumem Concorde Crash sogar ein oktett. Selbst in der konzentration auf ausschließlich avanciertes ist die vielfalt der mixturen und Melangen derart stupend, dass der pianoverankerte high-energy-jazz von malarafe relativ anachronistisch wirkt. Diese szene besticht durch den stilmischenden Wildwuchs, der sich sein etikett ‘aktuell’ redlich verdient durch ungeniertes plündern im fundus von acoustic und electro. Echantillonneur (Frankokanadisch für Sampler), programmation, traitements, modulation, manipulation sonore, radioglyphe generator, table tournante und überhaupt électroniques sind nahezu unverzichtbar und haben die Gitarre auf den zweiten platz verdrängt, trotz der saitenlastigen L’Hexacord-Combo. Abenteuerliche noisecollagen und stilhybriden als Anything-Goes-Wildstyle bevorzugt mit live-risiko machen diese zusammenstellung zu einer fundgrube für menschen mit offenen ohren für die entdecker- & Erlinderlust an der ‘…Und-Anderes’-Frontier. Überhaupt überzeugt diese musik, die ohne groß zu übertreiben mit Aventureuse chercheuse de textures, Poésie transdisciplinaire oder Cocktail d’ambiances sonores radicales werben kann, durch ihren unpuristischen, fast hätte ich gesagt unpuritanischen, überschwang. Dabei hat sich diese szene nicht künstlich aufgebläht. Lediglich die namen Mathieu Deschenaux, der kontrabass bei Concorde Crash und bei Bobok spielt, und Fyanschiste Yaschenss, der ebenfalls bei Concorde Crash und als ausgeflippter freak mit dem Pot-pourri copromélomanie zu hören ist, tauchen doppelt auf. Ich kann nur dringend raten, die peilsender auf Quebec auszurichten, diese romanisch-katholische enklave im angloamerikanischen mehrheits-wir scheint vor spielwitz zu brodeln.

Why there’s so much great music being made in Canada and ignored south of the border is a mystery. Some of the central figures in Montréal’s Ambiances Magnetiques scene — Jean Derome, Rene Lussier, Martin Tétreault — have built up a bit of a name outside their homeland, but many others are sadly unknown, including the twenty acts collected on Sang 9. The disc-features artists who sent their tapes into the DAME office, giving a survey of another round of remarkable practitioners of musique actuelle. It’s a talented and diverse group of players, and anyone interested in new sounds from the north is likely to find something of interest. Individual opinions will vary, of course, but out of twenty tracks there are only three I would skip on future listens — pretty good odds. More than half employ electronics and studio contruction: Pascal Desjardins and Frederic Leonard’s Lavabo is a glitchy clash of city, country and outer space; Jocelyn Doctor Tellier does a creepy, crawly Saturation du marché; Compromelomanie’s Potpourri Copromelomanie is a strange mash of Looney (out of) Tune; and Arborisationterminale’s Hip Christmas Rock is a dark winter storm. Some of the acoustic-oriented tracks are less forward reaching, but André Marceau, and Tutu combo use voice to interesting effect and L’Hexacorde and Bobok might well pick up the torch for some of Montréal’s jazzier players. DAME and Ambiances Magnetiques have released a number of other compilations, all of which are good introductions to underacknowledged Montréal musicians. Sang 9 shows there’s even more at home like them.

This compendium features twenty new artists pushing the boundaries of musique actuelle. The Ambiances Magnétiques label (a.k.a. DAME), has a strong roster in the genre stalwarts Robert Marcel Lepage, Jean Derome, Martin Tétreault and more, but this collection shows the future is bright with a spectrum of new, fresh talent. The assembly of talent runs the gamut from electroacoustic to astro-jazz and from third stream to rock in opposition. Fresh and exciting, it is post-all so very much and a highly promising cornucopia of fresh ideas. (4)

Québec has been a haven for modern music in many forms for some time, but not with such diversity and visibility as in the last few years. Labels like Constellation, Alien8, Intr_version, Substractif, No Type, Victo and festivals like FIMAV and Mutek have fostered growth in rock, electronics and jazz. DAME has been a home for labels interested in improv, new composition and electroacoustics for ages, and now they are casting an eye on the future artists in these genres with Sang9, or “New Blood” as the word play translates. Over the 20 tracks we are treated to power lounge, breathless world/jazz (Melanie Auclair), car-crash rock (Face Dans l’dash) and a cappella phonetics (Kareya). Beyond the music itself, what is striking about the collection is how well it all fits together. Tastes aside, there isn’t a track presented that doesn’t provide some surprise and promise.

With this compilation Ambiances Magnétiques presents 20 new groups and artists. Artists that have no album out yet. And listening to this cd not all of them are ready for that, I think. All 20 groups present themselves with one track. Information on all these musicians is included in english and french. All groups involved have in common that they play some kind of ‘new music’. The spectrum is broad. But I won’t go here into each track. So let me at least mention all the groups and musicians that are covered here: In Vitro, Concorde Crash, The Fighting Koalas, Dickie’s Nodan Levesky, Pascal Desjardins & Frédéric Léonard, Mélanie Auclair, Face dans I’dash, Torngat, Kareya, Malarafe, Cléo Palacio-Quintin & Pascal Boudreault, Jocelyn “Doctor” Tellier, Copromélomanie, James Schidlowsky, Hiatus, Tutu Combo, André Marceau, L’Hexacorde, Bobok, Arborisationterminale. It’s no coincidence that the cd opens with a track by In Vitro, certainly one of the most interesting groups presented here. It’s a project started by Colin Gagné and Lévy Bourbonnais that impresses because of the strange and original structure of the piece, moving between improv and structure, acustic and electro. The Fighting Koalas also make a hybrid of acustic and electronic music, but in a more conventional musical form. Dickie’s Nodan Levesky is a quartet of two acoustic guitars, percussion and electric bass. An instrumental kind of rock chamber music that brings back memories of early Conventum. Also l’Hexacorde offers an interesting piece of rock chamber music that you don’t expect these days. Face dans l’dash offers a very noisy and radical excursion. Just like Arborisationterminale Torngat shows the groovy and funky side of Quebec, but fail to convince. Malarafe comes most close to jazz music, with a pianist playing in a style that you either hate or like. But alle of them are capable musicians I must say. For me it are the musicians that experiment with electronic and acustic sound within unusual structures that make this cd worthwhile, like the duo Cléo Palacio-Quintin and Pascal Boudreault. The compilation makes evident that Ambiances Magnétiques does not have to worry about the future. This compilation leaves no doubt that are many interesting things going on there. It should appeal to all of you that interested in the new music scene of Quebec.

This compilation album has a symbolic meaning. It was put together by DAME, the company running the Montréal “musique actuelle” imprint Ambiances Magnétiques. The name is usually associated to a generation of artists who by 2003 had around 25-30 years of musical activity behind them. Those numbers come pretty close to the average age of the artists on Sang9. Coming from all around the province of Quebec, but mostly from Montréal, these youngsters, “fresh blood” following the translation of the title, cover every aspect of avant-garde music, from free jazz to deconstructed rock, computer experiments, noise, sound poetry, and post-psychedelic freak-outs. The range of styles and talents is very impressive, but what strikes is the dominating presence of acoustic instruments over electronics. Highlights are numerous, so are interrogations triggered by the listening experience (what is this “string” Francis Arsenault plays in Face dans l’dash’s noise fest Bush on the Highway?). Personal favorites include Concorde Crash’s bastardized take on progressive folk, Pascal Desjardins and Frédéric Léonard’s Lavabo, Cléo Palacio-Quintin’s “hyper-flute” (a flute plugged into a computer, much like Carlos Bechegas’ MIDI flute set-up), Jocelyn “Doctor” Tellier’s sound collage Saturation du Marché (reminiscent of Ernesto Diaz-Infante’s home recordings), James Schidlowsky’s virtuoso prepared guitar, and L’Hexacorde’s personal take on new ensemble music, with early Univers Zero overtones. Four or five tracks out of 20 lack originality or taste, which is a respectable average for such a compilation album. Now let’s see which artists will get a full-length release out on Ambiances Magnétiques.
