Quatuor Bozzini (a string quartet from Montréal) performs a perplexing work by Jean Derome and Joane Hétu. Le mensonge et l’identité (Lies and Identity) is a three-movement contemporary composition asking the musicians to speak and move around the stage, in addition to more conventional musical gestures. The libretto takes a lot of room and consists of snippets of wisdom from famous authors (identified) depicting truths, half truths and lies, and biographical details (true or false) about the performers. The whole thing adopts a rather heavy suite form where talking frequently interrupts the flow of the music, itself rather fast-paced except for a few more lyrical moments. There’s no boredom to be had on this record (and the libretto mixes French and English with German and Italian bits), but it’s neither an easy nor an entirely convincing listen, at least on the first pass.
