Face cachée des choses
Diane Labrosse
This is what experimental music should be, but so rarely is—adventurous, imaginative, poetic and sensual, as it engages both the heart and mind of the listener. With Face cachée des choses Labrosse amply demonstrates that it is indeed, possible to make new music with old pots. — Option, USA
— ImproJazz, France
After taking part in countless groups and collaborations, it is now time for Diane Labrosse to present her first solo CD for Ambiances Magnétiques. With her digital sampler, she records sounds which are alternately crude and gentle, appealing and irritating. “Face cachée des choses” (“Hidden Side of Things”) hence becomes an inventory of appliances, a layout of tools, a bunch of objetcs, a series of mysterious, endearing treatments.
Travelling log, solitary walks, evenings of euphoria, peaceful nights, moments of anxiety, ordinary afternoons, a touch of exhibitionism and a bunch of frogs. A user friendly music, electrodomestic, organic organs, small animal ensembles, unknown soloists…
“Like the turtle, I work slowly and carry my house around with me. I have put it all on this record, but without the piano, no musical instruments. Only a hidden side of things.”

Chicks and Other Barnyard Fauna
With the notable exception of sugary pop, all music styles are dominated by the male. Whether he’s grunting into the microphone, strumming his guitar, or blowing his lungs out on the saxophone, the manly man monopolizes the image of the musician, be it in corporate rock or on the new music scene. When women venture into his domain, they are often coerced into fitting the mold of the industry.
That’s why it is so surprising to find this many creative, challenging, talented women in DAME’s catalog. But one should not forget that early in its lifetime the collective Ambiances Magnétiques welcomed three artists whose musical activities, organizing minds and determination provided a force of attraction for other women.
