  • Interview, Amy Horvey dans Temporary Fault

«Review», Massimo Ricci, Temporary Fault, 6 janvier 2010
    mercredi 6 janvier 2010 Presse

A young virtuoso of the trumpet (she was born in 1980) who has worked with Pierre Boulez among others, Horvey presents works from different composers, of which only Giacinto Scelsi I’m familiar with. The latter’s Quattro Pezzi Per Tromba Sola are the best introduction to the artist’s outstandingly eminent know-how, her timbre is a thing of beauty — control and restraint mixed with eloquent intensity. After this fine start, the program swiftly tends to an area of music which is experimental but not in a really innovatory way, thus hindering a little our full appreciation of the protagonist’s irrefutable qualities. Two pieces — Anna Höstmann’s Interview, dedicated to pioneer trumpeter Edna White, and Ryan Purchase’s Apparatus Inconcinnus make use of spoken fragments amidst the instrumental lines; the final Overture To The Queen Of The Music Boxes is an interesting parallelism between Horvey delivering a klezmer melody against Jeff Morton’s small mechanical universe made of toy boxes, toy instruments and electronics. Cecilia Arditto’s Musica Invisibile is instead almost entirely forgettable: a dusty, old-sounding piece that manages to render even the employment of extended techniques uninteresting, if not annoying. With a better repertoire, Amy Horvey will definitely shine.

    Infininiment dans Sands Zine

«Recensione», Etero Genio, Sands Zine, 3 janvier 2010

Nous perçons les oreilles dans The Wire

«On Location. Live and kicking: festivals, concerts, events in the flesh. All Frontiers. Nuovo Teatro Comunale & Sala Civica Bergamas, Gradisca d’Isonzo, Italy», Daniel Spicer, The Wire, no 311, 1 janvier 2010
    vendredi 1 janvier 2010 Presse

Gradisca d’Isonzo, a small and unremarkable town in the north east of Italy, seems an unlikely spot to host an international festival of experimental music. But, close to the border of Slovenia, it’s the sort of place that can easily get hold of the generous government funding needed to draw the region closer to the heart of the nation. It explains how this three-day event managed to present artists from three continents to packed houses absolutely free of charge – a situation unthinkable in most other locations.

Still, much of the music would be familiar to seasoned festivalgoers, with the majority of musicians drawn from the fringes of Improv and free jazz. […]

Canadian duo Nous Perçons Les Oreilles, ventured into some of the furthest out areas of improvisation. Combining twin alto saxes with Jean Derome’s whistles, flutes and mouthpieces and Joane Hétu’s vocal groans, whines and whinnies, they produced an ever evolving thicket of organic noise with a heavy dose of sound poetry.
