Saxophonists Jean Derome and Joane Hétu have created a forty-eight minute masterpiece with Nous percons les oreilles. Through horns, flutes, objects, squeaks, beeps, cries, exclamations and songs, these two French Canadian artists have conjured up the earth’s hidden spirits and demons, fleshed them out and transferred their language through twelve unnamed tracks which can only be distinguished by their time length.

The improvisational shamanic folk in this album is possessed. Opening up, the alto sax is like a morning bell, awakening and demanding. Through the next few tracks, the aggression builds with glitchy improv screeches and beeps, yet the patterns of noise almost resemble an unknown speech that few can decipher, let alone communicate with. Throughout the album the music returns to calm distorted moans and gentle flutes — the invoking of the dead ancestors and the folktale myths. The record ends with lowly growls, rapid breaths and teetering barks — welcome to our universe!

Derome and Hétu’s album draws slight comparisons to groups like Wooden Wand and The Vanishing Voice, particularly with the earthy tones, native folk and improvisational jazz elements. Appropriate listening: anywhere, but particularly outdoors, surrounded by nature’s animals and creation. You’ll feel the music’s effect all around, in the trees, in the mockingbird’s tune and in your own skin.

A weightier Canadian balance to the international sounds is the exclusive-to-VTO triple bill at the Tranzac club May 14. The Rent and Hat + Beard are locals, while Shaman from Montréal is also on hand. Consisting of Jean Derome and Joane Hétu on woodwinds, voices and objects Nous percons les oreilles Ambiances Magnétiques AM 200 CD exposes Shaman’s strategy of D-I-Y ethnomusicology. Like ancient tribal healers the duo expresses itself through verbal screams, squeaks, murmurs, mumbles and cries as well as inchoate instrumental textures. The two recount 12 short narratives which are as much Dada as primitive, wrapped in onomatopoeia that bonds mouth expressions such as cheers, yelps and gurgles with slide-whistle peeps, unsequenced altissimo saxophone stridency, key percussion, clipping chromatic timbres and reverberating body tube echoes.

E’ ciò che emerge dalla poetica evidentemente disturbata e “dadaista” (per non dire parafisica) di Mankind (Ice Machine), vale a dire un incredibile duo femminile che sa muoversi con estrema disinvoltura tra “sospiri ritmici post-wyattiani” (Mile End Throat Singers), elettronica schizzata (Todo que tengo) e psyco-minimalismo à la Comelade (The Anti-Rules).

Ignaz Schick e Martin Tétreault (Live • 33 • 45 • 78) si presenta in un contesto ancora più radicale: quattordici tracce di radicalismo estremo dove i due musicisti si dividono non solo i canali (quello di sinistra Ignaz, a destra Martin) ma anche i marchingegni elettronici.

Nous Perçons Les Oreilles (cioè Jean Derome e Joane Hétu) con Shaman ne rappresentano — invece — il contraltare acustico attraverso dodici tracce inesorabilmente segnate dal trionfo del fiatismo improvvisativo (sax, flauti e oggetti vari e la voce stessa).

Dal canto loro Marilyn Lerner, Matt Brubeck e Nick Fraser con Ugly Beauties, pur continuando a muoversi nel campo della free-improvvisation, ci propongono patterns più delineati soprattutto con il “lirismo slabbrato” di Oubliette che, grazie all’ottimo violoncello di Matt si spinge nei pressi di certo camerismo contemporane, così come nell’intensa Figure lisse dove l’interplay “piano/violoncello” sostenuto dalla soffusa batteria di Fraser è davvero notevole.

Nous perçons les oreilles is Jean Derome and Joane Hetu. They present their next step under this name after a silence of about eight years. Shaman is their third work. We hear Hetu on sax and voice. Derome also on sax and voice plus flute and objects. Emotional and intense improvisations. With the title Shaman they want to hint at their conviction that their work is “closer to the world of healing, supernatural communication, and ancestral memory than the world of entertainment.”

C’était l’été de 2009. Malgré ma réticence à collaborer à la grande arnaque que constitue le Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, je me suis laissé tenté par une paire de billets gratuite pour le show du grand maître qu’est Ornette Coleman. Mais aussitôt installé dans l’étrange lieu que constitue la salle Wilfrid-Pelletier de la Place-des-Arts, un sentiment de type claustrophilique s’empara de ma personne. Une salle trop grande, une salle trop peuplée, un Ornette trop loin. Ruiné. Avais-je perdu la raison? Non. Et voici pourquoi. À mes côtés, assistant parallèlement à la prestation Colemanienne, se trouvaient respectivement Joane Hétu et Jean Derome. Deux piliers. Deux géants. À mes côtés. Et soudainement, je compris. Car je ressentie en moi cette gêne, cet émoi plus grand que nature. À Ô combien de reprises avais-je entendu et vécu la musique de ces artistes dans l’environnement propice à la compréhension de leur art. Oui, ces gens savaient comment et surtout où véhiculer le message (sans rien enlever au grand Ornette) et l’avait fait tout au long de leur carrière. Sur Shaman, Derome et Hétu démontrent une fois de plus que l’intimité n’a pas de prix. Monsieur Simard, prenez note.

2^e écoute: Superbe disque d’improvisation, pas du tout cabotin comme certains pourraient le craindre. Des duos courts et inspirés, avec beaucoup de bruits de bouches et de petits objets et jouets, mais approchés avec énormément de sérieux. Ce n’est pas disque auquel je m’attendais de Joane Hétu et de Jean Derome, c’est mieux. Je vais garder une place de prédilection dans mon cœur pour leur précédent, La vie, c’est simple, mais ce Shaman ensorcèle. Bravo.

[…] Parlant de Joane Hétu, la voici avec son inséparable Jean Derome, dans un nouveau disque de leur duo Nous perçons les oreilles (le dernier remonte à… quand au juste… [farfouille dans sa discothèque]… 2002!?! Ils étaient dus! Sur la forme, Shaman est plus près du premier disque (éponyme) que de La vie, c’est simple — autrement dit, pas de chansons cette fois-ci, que des improvisations courtes (douze, entre une et six minutes). Sur le fond, Shaman est AUSSI différent des deux autres disques que La vie, c’est simple pouvait l’être du premier, signe que ce duo continue d’évoluer dans le temps. La musique est sérieuse, intense (ce qui ne veut pas dire “bruyante”), bruitiste (je me répète, mais ce qui ne veut pas dire “bruyante”), émotive, atavistique en ceci qu’elle remonte à une forme d’expression ritualistique mais arythmique et amélodique. Très impressionnant à la première écoute, et j’ai hâte de lui donner une seconde écoute plus attentive.
