The exhausted Jakob Richter, nicknamed the Czech stallion — a ladder manufacturer — stared at the second hand of his watch, mesmerized by the appalling elasticity of its jerky movement. In a certain way, this is comparable to the anguish of the drop that causes a vase of roses to overflow.
