Tanya Tagaq’s music is like nothing you’ve ever heard before. This Arctic-born artist is an improvisational performer, avant-garde composer and experimental recording studio artist. She won the Polaris Music Prize in 2014 for an album entitled Animism, a work that shook up the music world at home and abroad with the power and originality of its vision. On her follow-up album, Polaris Prize-nominated Retribution, she is even more musically aggressive and politically hard-hitting, delivering a provocative and powerful masterpiece that gives you goosebumps.

Recently named a Member of the Order of Canada and recipient of two honorary doctorates, Tanya Tagaq challenges preconceived notions of gender and culture, and tackles themes of environmentalism, human rights and post-colonial issues. Her music and voice carry a complex, vehement, sometimes howling protest, denouncing the lack of respect for women’s rights in relation to the lack of respect for the planet and the lack of respect for aboriginal rights.
