Super scintillant / Nicolas Bernier, Mélanie Bourassa

At the heart of Super scintillant, Mélanie Bourassa’s bass clarinet is always routed into Nicolas Bernier’s modular rig, making it not only subject to effects processing but also causing it to elicit new material from the synthesizer. At the crossroads of ambient and improvised music, the artists construct their music in the moment, reacting to unpredictable electronic events. On one hand, it’s palpably an exchange between two players and often occupies a similar aural scale to a conventional instrumental duo, yet on the other the vivid, colourful timbral aspect and the processing of the bass clarinet usher them to another stylistic and textural realm. Bernier and Bourassa’s deft sonic chemistry carves out something utterly singular and yet inviting of attentive, repeat listening.

About…

Within the Super scintillant duo, the clarinet possesses a magical power: the ability to activate the electronic synthesizer. Together, the artists produce music that is both gentle and vibrant, originating from the unusual encounter of two worlds: that of bass clarinet virtuoso Mélanie Bourassa and the modular synthesizer of Nicolas Bernier. At the crossroads of ambient and improvised music, the artists construct their music in the moment, reacting to unpredictable electronic events. From this dialogue emerge perpetual surprises that materialize into rich sonic textures, sure to captivate the ears and inspire attentive listening.
