La nuit où j’ai dit non

Martin Tétreault

Fluid sounding with plenty of textures to sink into… It’s even (gasp) Enjoyable to listen to! White Noise, UK

Released on Audioview — the label of Belgium distributor Lowlands — La nuit où j’ai dit non reveals a lesser known aspect of Martin Tétreault’s work. Here, nothing is brutal nor exacerbated; the music is instead ambient, cosmic, electronic… Hovering improvisations which develop through slow rhythms, long crossfades and delicate collages. La nuit où j’ai dit non is an intergalactical opera of space age musique concrète, chock full of details. All of this is the result of 25 LPs revolving on 4 turntables. It feels good!

La nuit où j’ai dit non is the first solo disc by Martin Tétreault.

Review

White Noise, June 1, 1999

Having previously dismissed this boy as a Christian Marclay-like arthouse wanker, I am forced to retract my opinion by this cd. Fluid sounding with plenty of textures to sink into. Apparently it’s all made with turntables, but you can’t tell. It’s even (gasp) Enjoyable to listen to!

Release Tour Mind…

Spike Taylor, Exclaim!, July 1, 1998

Montréal turntable experimenter Martin Tétreault has never purported to wear a DJ mantle. He works with the tools of the DJ trade, sure, but he’s the only one ripping into the turntable mechanisms to make a niche tor his ood take on the old technology. La nuit où j’ai dit non tinds our hero with a stack ot 25 records and in an ambient mood. There is surreal brilliance in his mixes, papering the inside ot our skulls with coded messages and throwing the skeleton key into a deep dark nowhere. There is no one in the DJ trade like Tétreault; he should be heard and passed around and around at least 33. 3 tirnes per minute.

Als het the day I said no geweest was, had niemand vragen gesteld. )

It’s been a long wait since extreme turntablist Martin Tétrault’s debut disc Des pas et des mois (1990), and this one is at the other extreme from Tétrault’s jarring bruitiste experiments. Composed entirely of improvisations on three turntables and 25 albums (Pierre Henry, Sound Effects, Close Encounters of the Third Kind…), La nuit où j’ai dit non gives off the spacey ambianceof an orchestra tuning up for the next century — and comes off more like electroacoustics than electronica. 7/10
