Two quite active Canadian musicians came together in April 2002 to do a live recording. Aimé Dontigny, also member of morceaux_de_machines and Diane Labrosse, who is part of Les Poules and collaborated with the likes of Ikue Mori (Tzadik), Martin Tétreault and Zeena Parkins combined forces and produced their first dark experimental album with four long tracks. The debut of this new collaboration entitled Télépathie heads of rather dark, but gets a little noisier along the line. Especially the beginning of the third song entitled photo satellite is good example of this. Undefinable electronics, static noises and sounds like those of a highway go hand in hand. The fourth track features the first vocal contribution. A french male voice tells something, while at the same time some static machine-like noise has been put on top of it. The track continues with a sort of electronic radio tuning and metal sounds. In general the music is not that hectic. Diane Labrosse, who uses a sampler and Aimé Dontigny, who makes use of a computer, create a nice sombre improvisational atmosphere with enough variation and noise to keep the music far from boring.

Fans of the local actuelle/noise scene should already be familiar with the highly acclaimed Web-based label No Type. For the last five years, No Type has been offering up a quality assortment of experimental noise and actuelle CDs, vinyl and MP3s from a large roster of North American artists. Among these artists is the computer vs. sampler duo of Dontigny and Labrosse, whose April 2002 show at the Casa del Popolo is immortalized here. A soundscape in collage form, ranging from electronic bleeps, hisses and bursts of noise to organic squelches and crumbles and pitter-pats, the sound is at once playful and disturbing. 8/10

Ne me demandez pas pourquoi, mais il y a quelque chose de très sexy dans un mini CD. En plus, a dunée réduite (20 minutes) permet de ne pas fatiguer l’oreille, ce qui en fait un format idéal pour les musiques exigeantes. Tétreault et Yoshihide l’ont bien compris. Pour leur seconde collaboration, ils nous offrent un coffret de trois minis, une heure de musique. Le disque Studio présente une série de duos abstraits aux textures parfois abrasives. Sur le disque Analogique, Têtreault remixe le matériel à l’aide de magnétophones à bande (vous savez, les vieux Revox). Sur le Numérique, c’est au tour de Yoshihide, à l’ordinateur. Ardu mais étonnant. 9

Les Poules is het improvisatieproject rondom een Canadees trio, bestaande uit de dames Joane Hétu (zang, saxofoon), Diane Labrosse (keyboards) en Danielle Palardy Roger (drums). Het collectief was al eerder actief onder het theatergezelschap Wondeur Brass, maar met Les Poules verkennen ze alweer enige tijd hun muzikale talenten.

Prairie orange telt negen atmosferische werken, waarbij samplers, percussie, saxofoon in verschillende toonsoorten een prominente rol spelen. Met popmuziek heeft het echt totaal niets van doen en zingen doet Joane Hétu niet. In het weidse muzieklandschap van elektronische en akoestische hoorspel maakt ze eigenzinnige klanken met haar mond, die variëren van klikgeluiden tot gehijg in de verte. Uiteindelijk smelt dit alles weer op een sluwe manier samen tot een filmisch klankentapijt.

Zestien lange jaren moest het duren voordat deze cd als opvolger van het debuut Contes de l’amère loi uitkwam. Het lijkt mij onnodig om vergelijkingen te maken, daarvoor is teveel gebeurd in die tussentijd. Maar als improvisatiecollectief is Les Poules met Praire Orange erin geslaagd om een boeiend en soms zelfs broeiend geheel aan elkaar te breien. De tracks blijven zonder uitzondering binnen een uithoudbare lengte, dus als luisteraar raak je nauwelijks verveeld. Of je nu meteen overdonderd wordt door de geluidsbrij is weer net iets anders.
