  • volume 5: Chante! 1985-2000, Ambiances Magnétiques dans Incursion Music Review

«Review», Richard di Santo, Incursion Music Review, 1 mars 2001
    jeudi 1 mars 2001 Presse

The second disc commemorates 15 years of song on the Ambiances magnétiques label. Chante! collects 18 previously released tracks by the likes of Diane Labrosse, Nathalie Derome, Michel F Côté, René Lussier, Papa Boa, Les Granules and a host of others who have demonstrated that the avant-garde and traditional songwriting have ample room in which to mingle. The compilation is an eclectic mix of styles and genres (feel free to put an presumptuous “avant-” in front of any the following terms: rockabilly, popular, jazz, big band, blues… you name it and it’s here). Peculiar, funny and spirited, this is a vibrant compilation that will surely be welcome by anyone interested in turning songwriting traditions on their heads.

NB: Unfortunately, the only problem with both of these releases is the lack of translations. Of course, providing a translation might defeat the purpose of most of this music, but at least some context would have helped a listener like me, whose french language skills are lacking the versatility and fluency necessary to understand the compressed idiom of these lyrics. The lyrics obviously pique my curiosity and so I end up spending half my day wrestling with what little french I know, studiously bent over my dictionaries. That being said, much of this music will be lost on those lacking a working knowledge of french, so buyers beware.

    Tricotage dans Incursion Music Review

Two CDs of improvised music from the eminent Canadian label Ambiances Magnétiques.

The first is a meeting place for two accomplished improvisers and composers, Joëlle Léandre on double-bass and Danielle Palardy Roger on drums and percussion. Both artists have extensive discographies exploring a wide range of musical styles, and this is the first time they are working together. The music on this disc is challenging and complex. The double-bass is grating and hyperactive; the percussions flutter through the pieces as if on wings. Together these two elements create an incongruous mass of much vigour and skill… My desire though was to have the percussion become more prominent in the pieces — something that is accomplished quite nicely on coupes blanches for example. But on this piece and a handful of others there are vocal outbursts and chants by Joëlle that I feel the pieces could do without; the voice takes away from the immediacy of these explorations. But it is clear there is much passion and energy in these performances; listening to the recording makes me long to hear these performances live, where I feel this music would be better appreciated by its listeners.

Les 4 ronds sont allumés, Nathalie Derome dans Incursion Music Review

Chansons parodisiaques is my first contact with the Québec-based chanteuse Nathalie Derome. She is joined on this recording by the versatile René Lussier (a seasoned regular on the Ambiances magnétiques label) on guitar and his now infamous “daxophone”, as well as Guillaume Dostaler on Rhodes and synths. The songs are a strange, almost carnivalesque blend of styles, playing on the conventions of pop, jazz and cabaret, among others. Derome’s voice bounces around in so many directions, and is able to create just as many moods; in one moment she can be reciting a rapid fire of lyrics and the next she’ll be sounding a haunting and more abstract song. The instrumentation is superb, though difficult and unconventional; I really enjoyed listening to Dostaler’s spirited keyboards and Lussier’s schizophrenic guitar. A meeting place for three bizarre and innovative artists, this album grows on the listener with mysterious charm.

Les 4 ronds sont allumés dans Blow Up

Donne e canzoni, prima parte. Capolavoro? Probabile. (9)

Chansons d’un jour dans Blow Up

«Recensione», Roberto Municchi, Blow Up, no 34, 1 mars 2001
    jeudi 1 mars 2001 Presse

Donne e canzoni parte seconda.

    Plinc! Plonc! dans Hour

    «Review», Mike Chamberlain, Hour, 1 mars 2001

On this live recording from 1997 from the Soirées de musique faîche series, saxophonist and flutist Jean Derome and drummer Pierre Tanguay are determined to show that they are a couple of guys who just want to have fun — and they do. The emphasis is on rhythm, and to that end they use their main instruments, small percussive devices, and their voices to create something of a musicel comedy routine. Which begs the question: How does Jean Derome play so well with his tongue planted so far in his cheek? 4/5
