“Compassion (1993) is my attempt to combine everything with everything else, even the already combined. Just as in life everything is combined with everything else,” says composer Chris Newman about this one-hour long piece for violin and piano, recorded in concert with Anna Lindal and Henrik Löwenmark. How it sounds? Mix the legacy after Feldman and Bruckner with a touch of arte povera and add a hint of minimalism — and you’re still nowhere near: “… so overwhelming that only the classics have achieved anything like it… One of the most sublime musical experiences I’ve had.
