La boutique des nouvelles musiques

Review

Irwin Block, The Gazette, 1 décembre 2005

The Montréal-based trio of reedman Jean Derome, bassist Normand Guilbeault and drummer Pierre Tanguay bring their perspective, as musicians associated with the avant-garde, to a mainly mainstream display of intimate knowledge of the music and the culture it represents. The 11 selections - Ellington’s The Feeling of Jazz, Fats Waller’s Jitterbug Waltz, Cole Porter’s You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To, and lesser- known tunes by pianist Mischa Mengelberg - are chosen for their joy. All are played with verve and humour, with plenty of space for edgy and soulful improvisation. Derome also sings or intones on several cuts; his voice is honest, though he shouldn’t give up his reeds. 3 1/2
