In Vitro

  • Year of composition: 2003
  • Duration: 4:08

A touch of randomness, but mostly play. A wave that comes in and goes out somewhere else, transformed. A data input, another lost. A secluded process breaking down closed doors. Tripping over a wire and holding on to it. Getting lost on the way and falling asleep. Giving birth out of nothing, from what we hold in our hands, and from what slips out of them. In Vitro is a shape-shifting collective from Montréal, formed in 2000 by Lévy Bourbonnais and Colin Gagné. Between improv and structure, instrument and machine, pulse and framework, it offers a hybrid form of music in a live context. It also offers to stop reading right now and listen to the tune.

la cour suprême

Concorde Crash

  • Duration: 2:45

The seven architects of this supersonic crash met in a time and place that nurtured the evolution of music. In the late Café Ludik, Sainte-Catherine street, Montréal, one could still listen to spontaneously improvised music flirting with the scandal of dissonance (still valid, sadly!) and a desire to communicate with ferocious melancholia the worries of a generation who believes it sees an end to History from the corner of its eye. So all the members originate from a number of shady and/or audacious projects. For lack of sufficient testosterone levels, they are true musical libertines, cheating on one style with another, all that within a single piece and following an exponential curb. In a nutshell, the group wants to put an end to the hegemony of the tonal and the binary in the eardrums of the people.

Douleur

Mélanie Auclair

  • Duration: 3:22

“Douleur” (“Pain”) is taken from a larger project entitled “Musique spontanée sur formes données” (“Spontaneous music on given forms”). The project consisted of a series of duets based on improvisation shaped by certain aspects of musique concrète. The evolution from one piece to the next parallels the stages of a progressive illness.

New Groove

Torngat

  • Year of composition: 2002
  • Duration: 3:39

A young quartet from Montréal, Torngat offers an enjoyable blend of conceptual Jazz/Groove marinated in vivid rhythms. Over time, this group has gained recognition and respect for the quality and originality of its sound. Torngat strikes a balance between total improvisation, structured improvisation and composition — on most occasions the result of a collective effort. Some of its projects are of an acoustic nature, others are on the electronic side or simply mix up both.

Avec le début et la fin

Pascal Boudreault, Cléo Palacio-Quintin

  • Year of composition: 2002
  • Duration: 3:10

Improvised music has been at the core of our artistic activities for many years. We have both developed interactive electronic systems to accompany our approach to instrumental improvisation with computers. We favor real-time performance, so there are no pre-recorded samples or after-the-fact studio work. The hyperflute is a concert flute linked to a computer by motion detectors. These sensors allow the performer to control electronic sound treatment parameters while playing and thus create many electroacoustic sound worlds. This recording also features an audio incarnation of the radioglyph generator, a concept meant to actualize the attention of improvisers in action. Like a basso continuo, this robotic synthesizer oscillates between frequencies/distances according to indirect influences.

Saturation du marché

Jocelyn Tellier

  • Year of composition: 2000
  • Duration: 3:34

The balance between the market and the consumer is an unequal one. Now that the market dominates the consumer, is it still listening to him? And what if the consumer had enough (without realizing it)? Could he prevent the Great Salesman from invading his life? I cannot answer these questions, but the intellectual numbness that is spreading in our society worries me. That’s what this piece attempts to express. Many tracks of treated guitar are joined by a track of ocarina (a gift left by a friend on my answering machine…) as a sudden urge to dance arises (the drums), but… like the consumer’s brain, we skip a beat. Then again, it’s not so bad, this numbness… (the remote control?)

Pot-pourri Copromélomanie

Fyanschiste Yaschenss

  • Year of composition: 2002
  • Duration: 3:26

In a society that lets itself get submerged by a mass pseudo-culture where only the container differs from the contents, in a world where the citizen gives way in the face of his own profound identity, Man must grant himself the right tools to thwart this situation. That’s how Copromélomanie came to existence. The goal of this project is to fight fire with fire, saturation with saturation, shit with shit! Straightaway, this false collective comes from an approach to total experimentation stigmatized by heavy topics such as psychiatry, prostitution, drugs, violence, evolution, and death. As time went by, the music of Copromélomanie moved just a bit out of the initial “extreme experimental” pattern. On the other hand, the topics remain pretty much the same.

Hiatus

  • Duration: 2:31

The music we want to create comes together through the freedom we grant ourselves in the act of improvisation, along with careful listening and respect for each contributor. This group is kind of like a laboratory to write and create freely and rigorously. Power is equally shared among members.

Tutu Combo

Formed five years ago by two poets and musicians, Tutu combo now consists of Patrick-Guy Desjardins, Catherine S Massicotte, Éric Normand and Robin Servant. Combining acoustical superpositions, theatrical antics and improvisation, the tutu’s performances bind together gestures, disks, sounds and music. All members are also involved in other activities.

Des monstres dans la gorge

André Marceau

  • Year of composition: 2001
  • Duration: 2:41

“The essential is invisible to the eye” explained the poet to a child, quoting the renowned author. To which the child replied: “Yeah, too bad, huh?” And suddenly the poet felt essential. I practise poetry in an interdisciplinary way: visual poetry; literary or oral; vocal, sound or noise-based; in performance, in action or in relation. In Québec City, together with militants and artists, I try to root telephone posts through the political poetry maneuvers of the Local Post Reappropriation Front (LPRF). I have also started the Poetry Actualization Springboard (PAS) and the “Poetry Fridays” at the Tam Tam Café. The unclassifiable kind, but then again “all the rest is mere fine writing.”

Quatuor bizarre

L’Hexacorde

  • Year of composition: 2001
  • Duration: 3:44

A group with a shifting line-up, L’Hexacorde favors the contemporary repertoire for classical guitar ensemble and its expansion. Through arrangements, commissions and premieres, the ensemble explores the potential of its unusual instrumentation, devoting a particular attention to Canadian music. When writing the Quatuor Bizarre (or “Strange Quartet”), Francis Marcoux was motivated by a healthy and strong will to blow to smithereens the sound construction L’Hexacorde had in mind up to that point. Composed for six (not four!) of our guitarists, the piece makes a point of not using their established skills, calling instead for piano, Archtop guitar, prepared guitars and a percussive guitar. In short, anything BUT classical guitar! Mister Marcoux also took pleasure in short-circuiting the immutable logic behind the quartet’s form and metrical, rhythmical, melodic and harmonic parameters by cutting off a whole section from his work, a section undoubtedly essential to the theoretical rigor of the piece. And it still works!!!!!!!!!!

Tapis

Bobok

  • Year of composition: 2003
  • Duration: 3:48

Lurking in the smooth shadows of a forest of ebony, pine and maple, gills are lending an ear to two trees that are tacking like drum sticks avoiding dangerous snares. Their dance foretells an acoustical storm. Not far from there, a house made of gold and metal resounds with the tumult of swaying guests transfigured with joy. It is there, in this strange forest of sound curls that we met each other to form Bobok. Here, we introduce a piece by Jeannot that evokes the disquieting sensation of a backwards walk on a travelator…

Hip Christmas Rock

Arborisationterminale

  • Duration: 1:50

Since 1998, Guillaume Théroux Rancourt and Philippe Godbout have been working on sounds, improvising on diverse, more or less electronic instruments. The atmospheres they create were part of numerous musical soirées in Québec, both aside adventurous poets and in front of divided audiences. Each performance is an occasion to renew the sonic experience, sometimes noisy, sometimes vibrant.

Arborisationterminale has released two self-produced albums and appears on three compilations from the Alterflow label. Each member is also active through a solo project, Guillaume Théroux Rancourt“>Guillaume as Le chien borgne, Philippe as Malade Mojo.
