Marielle Groven is a Canadian composer currently based in Berlin. Her music has been performed in Canada and abroad by ensembles including Ensemble Surplus (Freiburg), Ensemble Mosaik (Berlin), Le Nouvel ensemble moderne (Montréal), ECM+ (Montréal), The Moscow Ensemble, Ensemble Linea (Strasbourg), and Les Cris de Paris, at festivals including Klangwerkstatt, Voix Nouvelles, Northern Breeze, and Novelum. Marielle has attended summer courses and residencies such as Sommerakademie Schloss Solitude, Royaumont, Le Domaine Forget, the International Moscow Ensemble Academy, Koumaria, and in 2010 was artist in residence at the Cité international des arts (Paris). Throughout her studies she has had the privilege to study with a variety of important composers in the context of private lessons, masterclasses, and summer courses, including Pierluigi Billone, Brian Ferneyhough, Liza Lim, Chaya Czernowin, Steven Takasugi, and Daniel Peter Biro. Her work tends to draw on fragile and raw, often emotionally charged sounds, with a particular focus on points of contact between human and instrumentally produced sounds. In recent pieces, she has sought to engage directly with the act of listening in the context of a musical performance.
