Bass player Sylvain Gagné has been an active member of Montréal’s independent music scene for almost twenty years, playing in a wide variety of bands and projects.
Born into a family of musicians, Gagné started to teach himself electric bass while a teenager before enrolling in the pop/jazz music programme at Cégep Lionel-Groulx in the early 2000s. During his student days, he met Martin Messier and Simon Trottier with whom he formed the instrumental band White Noise Ensemble, gradually becoming familiar with different avant-garde music styles as well as freak folk.
Around the same time, Gagné joined the French group Mozaïq, playing with them at various venues and festivals across Québec province, as well as Makam, an instrumental outfit mixing dub, hip hop, rock and Middle Eastern music.
At the turn of the 2010s, along with Maxime Corbeil-Perron, he founded the instrumental duo Le Pélican Noir, a more personal project — for which he acts both as composer and arranger — that pushed him to approach his instrument differently while incorporating various effects into his sonic palette.
