Ensemble en pièces

Ensemble en pièces, led by Philippe Lauzier and Alexandre Grogg, is a jazz quintet with an often surprising sound where sophisticated writing meets raw improvisation, balancing on the fine point between restraint and spontaneity. The groupís flexible instrumentation (trumpet, alto sax, soprano sax, bass clarinet, piano, double bass and drums/percussion) distinguishes a repertoire of some 15 original compositions. But it is the individual contribution of each player that really builds this sound mosaic. In January 2004, ensemble en pièces was awarded a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts to finance the recording and production of their first CD, Jardin d’exil, to be released this fall on the Ambiances Magnétiques label.
