Nicolas Caloia
Nicolas Caloia is known for his musical integrity and insight. He has been active on the Montreal scene since the early 1990s as a bassist, composer and organizer. He can be heard in ongoing collaborations with Tristan Honsinger, Joe McPhee, Malcolm Goldstein, Lori Freedman, Matana Roberts, Yves Charuest, Sam Shalabi, and Jean Derome, or in past projects with Roscoe Mitchell, Marshall Allen, Steve Lacy, Hassan Hakmoun, William Parker, and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. He has fulfilled composition commissions from the Quatuor Bozzini, Tour de Bras, Productions SuperMusique, FIMAV, Radio-Canada, and CKUT 90.3 FM. He tours internationally with the string trio In the Sea (with Tristan Honsinger and Joshua Zubot), Silvervest (a duet with Kim Zombik), and Mercury (a duet with Lori Freedman). Nicolas has directed and composed music for several ensembles, including the Ratchet Orchestra, a 20-piece ensemble that has performed at the Festival international de musique actuelle de Victoriaville (FIMAV), L’OFF Jazz Festival, Guelph Jazz Festival, Jazz sur Mars, and Suoni Per Il Popolo.
