Artists Irem Bekter

Irem Bekter, polymorphic artist as much as by the multiplicity of her expression as by the diversity of her cultural origins, was born in Istanbul. At age eight she moved to England where she eventually obtained a degree in ballet and jazz ballet Elmhurst School, Camberley and the Royal Academy of Dance in London. Irem is also Bachelor from Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and attended classes at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Fascinated by Aboriginal arts, she dedicates herself body and soul to the Argentine folklore and especially the “zapateo" (Argentinian podorythmy) and folk dances, she studied with Koki and Pajarín Saavedra. Simultaneously, she perfected her vocal technique in native songs with Verónica Condomi and Clara Teran. The mastering of these disciplines and theatrical know-how combined to give birth to a new theatrical concept where, original zapateo mixes with sounds, words, rhythms and improvised music. Irem taught this concept for five years at the Department of Theatre University of Economics in Argentina. At the invitation of the National Theatre School of Canada, Irem Bekter hosted an introductory workshop on the concept of “Rhythm and Body On Stage,” in Montréal in 2003. From that meeting, and several others, Irem was inspired by Montréal’s creative turmoil and is currently pursuing the development of this concept with the Irem Bekter Quintet with fellow musicians Damian Nisenson, Daniel Emden, Willy Rios and Nicolas Cousineau.
