Many actuellecd.com artists are nominated for the 9th Opus prizes, awarded since 1996 by the Conseil québécois de la musique. The concert Palimpseste d’orchestre, revisiting the musics of Joane Hétu, Diane Labrosse and Danielle Palardy Roger is nominated for “Concert of the Year — actuelle and electroacoustic musics”. Playing Guitar: Symphony #1 by Tim Brady and Portrait Montréal by the Bozzini Quartet will face-off in the category “Disc of the Year — Modern and contemporary musics”. Canevas «+» by the Ensemble SuperMusique and Estrapade by morceaux_de_machines are both nominated for “Disc of the Year — Musique actuelle, Electroacoustics”. Finally, Mingus Erectus, by the Normand Guilbeault Ensemble is nominated for “Disc of the Year — Jazz and World music”. Winners will be announced on January 22, 2006.

Ambiances Magnétiques is making many year-end top lists. First, Mike Hansen of WhynotJazz on CKLN picks Prairie orange by Les Poules. François Couture of Délire actuel on CFLX picks Playing Guitar: Symphony #1 by Tim Brady. Mike Chamberlain chose 10 compositions by the Trio Derome Guilbeault Tanguay for his selection in Coda magazine, same as Bart Plantenga for radio Patapoe in Amsterdam. Finally, Montréal’s cultural weekly Ici (Montréal) also picked Playing Guitar: Symphony #1 in addition to Joëlle Léandre and Gianni Lenoci’s Sur une balançoire.

For its third discographic release on the Ambiances Magnétiques label (the 15th of his career!), composer and guitar player Tim Brady presents his first symphony for solo electric guitar, sampler, live electronics and chamber ensemble. And this ensemble is none other than the famed Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, conducted by . Due to its 24-bit captation, monkish stusio work and {nbio:brady_ti}’s musicianship, Playing Guitar: Symphony #1 is nothing less than a major work of the contemporary repertoire. The album is launched ,September 15, 2004, during the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne’s opening concert for the 2004-2005 season, at Montréal’s Claude-Champagne concert hall.
