Artists Gianni Lenoci

Pianist, keyboardist, composer, teacher Gianni Lenoci was born in Monopoli (Italy), June 6, 1963. After graduating from Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, Lenoci studied improvised music with Mal Waldron and Paul Bley. Since 1990, Lenoci teaches Performance and Composition in Jazz and Contemporary Music at Nino Rota Conservatory in his home town. He has played extensively both in solo and with his own groups as well as with a wide range of musicians, including Massimo Urbani, Steve Lacy, Joëlle Léandre, Steve Grossman, Harold Land, Bob Mover, Enrico Rava, Glenn Ferris, Eugenio Colombo, Don Moye, Han Bennink, Antonello Salis, Carlo Actis Dato, David Gross, Stephen Heckel, Paul Lovens, Sakis Papadimitriou, Georgia Sylleou, Jean-Jacques Avenel, John Betsch and Beñat Achiary. In 1996 he received a grant from Centre Acanthes in Paris. Gianni Lenoci is also active as an interpreter: his repertoire varies from radical composers Morton Feldman and John Cage to English virginal music, Érik Satie, Federico Mompou and Arnold Schönberg. He has performed in clubs, concert halls and festivals in Italy, France, England, Romania, Hungaria, Albania, Argentina, USA, Turkey and Canada and has recorded for Splasc(h), Modern Times, ASC, Leo, Sentemo, AFK, VM-ADA, Ambiances Magnétiques, VelNet and Soul Note. Lenoci is also the artistic director of Il Tempo Sospeso, a festival of improvised music held in Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Italy. His book Manuale del jazzista imperfetto (a title that could loosely be translated into The Handbook of the Un-perfect Jazzman) will soon be published in Italy by Art Communication Edizioni.
